Or, "how I learned to stay in the car".
I didn't take any snazzy pictures, so you'll have to be satisfied with a few words. I'll try to be punchy.
Anyhoodle, a decision was made to make an excursion to a particular butcher/deli kind of place about half way between here and downtown Toronto.
Now, I should say that, our impression is, that Toronto has been somewhat hard hit by the Coronavirus, but I don't have any actual numbers to back up that particular observation, so you'll have to take my word for it.
Suffice to say, in a similar fashion to most any large city, the occurrence of COVID-19 is considerably higher than most any place in suburbia.
Well, unless it's a meat processing plant, but that's a whole other clusterfuck.
I'm referring to the "Family Meat and Deli" on Brown's Line. You can look it up if you give a rat's ass.
But here's the thing.
There was some talk about "needing some meat", both on the part of T.C.'s older sister (she'll be 85 this summer, so we prefer to get her stuff, rather than have her go shopping) as well as a few things that they carry that we like. I'm referring of course to kranjska klobasa.
Our first clue should have been when T.C.'s sister called them a couple days ago, and the word was, "Oh sure, the two of you can come in, or you can order ahead of time."
Didn't register. But that should have been a red flag.
Now that we think on it, there are no deli type of stores that are just allowing folks to "come in".
The one we have here in Burlington was trying that a few weeks back, by only allowing two people in the store at a time, but when I was there, I could see that it clearly wasn't working.
The thing is, once you go into this type of place, you really need to stand in one spot, and not ramble around trying to decide what you want. If it wasn't for the fact that I would have had to touch the guy, I really wanted to clobber this one fellow who simply couldn't seem to figure out what he wanted without wandering up and down the display case.
In the meanwhile, that particular store (J & G Meats) has very astutely realised that having customers in the store simply doesn't work, and have gone to "curb side" shopping. We all know what that is, so no need to explain.
So, back to "Family Meat....". And this is all I know from the report that I got back from T.C.
They haven't a clue.
After she donned her mask and went in, I saw two more people go in, (without masks on, I might add) and it looked like there were already at least two or three in the store. And this is not a big store. About as wide as the average townhouse.
Not that wide.
So, T.C. is trying to keep her distance, getting somewhat hassled by other shoppers, who don't know where to stand, and then? They're calling out numbers!
She bailed.
Apparently, there was only one lady behind the counter, and just how she was supposed to be cleaning anything (including the number thingy) was unclear. (like, impossible) Plus, there was no protection for the cashier, like the sort of screen that mostly all of the retail outlets have installed. Just a disaster waiting to happen.
So now we know. We know why the numbers are so much higher in a city like Toronto compared to say, Burlington.
It's not just the stupid people. I think it also has to do with a sense that, even though there might be a ticket in the offing, the by law officers are so few and far between, that there's no worries about anyone putting up a fuss.
It was a nice day for a drive.
Which is to say, not a nice day to be outdoors. We had snow. It was maybe one or two degrees above zero when we got up. Not sure what to say about May. It pretty much sucks so far. Naturally, I've already switched out the winter tires.
On the other hand, the Marinas aren't opening, which means the boats won't be going in the water any time soon. But in light of the crappy weather, that seems to be an OK thing. Who knew?
Still unclear how the whole sailing thing is going to pan out this summer.
We'll see.
That's all I got.
Thanks for moving your eyes back and forth.
Keep washing those hands.

We don't have a bird cage.
There was a budgie here in the house when we moved here, but it took no time to get rid of him. He was "relocated". And no, that's not the same as, "he went to the farm". But, whatever.
His owners came and took him away.
So no need to line the bird cage with newspaper. We do however, have a wood burning fireplace, so I always make sure that I set aside a certain amount of newsprint that comes to the door for just that reason. I've heard it said that, "print media is dead", and if that's not quite the case, then I suspect that it's been on life support for some time. Just the same, there is enough newsprint floating around that I can start a fire whenever my little heart desires.
And where the heck am I going with this?
Well, a few days ago I guess it was, there was a tiny segment on the Toronto news about folks being upset about getting this one particular publication in their mailboxes. "It's Propaganda!" was the mantra.
Of course somebody, the News People maybe? contacted the Post Office to enquire about just why this was being circulated, to which the Post Office more or less said, "Um, because they're paying us."
Which, in consideration of the somewhat poor financial situation of our Canadian Postal Service, is probably a good thing.
Well yes, it is in fact, "Propaganda", but if you think in general terms about just what propaganda really is, then most anything that you read that might have a particular slant could be considered propaganda.
Oh and, interesting little side snippet, the German translation for "word of mouth" is "Mund Propaganda". Literally, "mouth propaganda".
So, here's the publication, or at least part of the front page:
I had a couple thoughts when I noticed it in our mailbox:
First of all, "oooh...we got mail". (Because we don't seem to get mail every day these days) and then, "Oh look, they're delivering this crap all the way out here. Huh."
I'm pretty sure my next thought was, "Welp, now I have enough newspaper to have a fire tonight if I want." And that was about it.
No calls to the media, or Canada Post.
Oh and, they're trying to say that the Coronavirus was a huge Chinese plot of some sort. Really, I didn't read it, so I have no clue. And hey, maybe it was? We'll never really know. Nor will these folks who pretend to know enough to put it in a "newspaper".
Now, I will say this. What ever numbers are coming out of places like China or Saudi Arabia in terms of the stats on the Virus? Not credible. And really, until every single citizen in any country you can name has been tested, none of the numbers are really believable.
Having said that, even if the numbers are off by a couple percentage points, there's a helluva difference between having more dead than the Vietnam War and say, 3800 plus deaths in a country like for example, Canada.
Meanwhile, this past weekend, Daughter Number One had a birthday. And I realise that, at a certain point in time in ones life, birthdays are maybe not the huge deal as when one was say, a teenager? Speaking for myself, I'd just as soon let birthdays slip on by with very, very little fanfare.
I'm sure however that there would have been at least some cake involved and a song if it weren't for the Pandemic.
Instead, there was a stream of visitors at the front of their house, with some presents to unwrap. No singing though.
T.C. made her a "clutch purse":
Now, I'll say this about that.
Prior to the whole Pandemic thing, any time that a present was being prepared here at The Ponderosa, there was always the concern that it would be discovered at some point during the process. You know, folks come over for dinner, there might be some reason to go to the sewing room, or out to the garage. Like that.
At one point maybe a month ago, T.C. caught herself about to say, "Oh, I'd better put that stuff away." and then realised that, nobody's coming into the house. And nobody will be for quite some time.
We were having a little discussion about just how cautious is TOO cautious. Um, I'm kind of on the side of, there is no such thing as too cautious?
Even though I might have the right of way on a rural road where the vehicles coming up on my side have a stop sign, do I just keep barrelling on through, hoping that that transport truck is going to stop? Or maybe I just might slow down a bit and keep an eye on him. What if he doesn't see the stop sign? By the way, I'm thinking of this particular example.
Anyhoo, that's all of my ramblings for today, and maybe for a few days.
Thanks for stopping by.

Down to my last Q-tip.
OK, "cotton swab" if you prefer. And, maybe I have some more in another closet. Not sure.
Just one of those minor annoyances where you go, "Oh crap, forgot about that". Because, you know, one does tend to "shop for the basics". At least I do. There were a few nitwits loitering about in Costco that last time T.C. and I went. So much so that, getting past this one particular dimwit on her phone was neigh on impossible if any kind of "social distancing" was to be observed.
There was one moment a few days ago when I was in the Food Basics down the street, and some guy was on his phone (texting with his wife for grocery ideas? ) and I couldn't get past him, so in a voice that was certainly loud enough, I said, "HAVE YOU MADE A DECISION?" And this was after I had (politely, I might add) given him a good minute to figure out just what the hell to do. He apologised and moved along. Of course, the apologising thing is supposedly the Canadian thing to do. In the States I might have got shot. Hey, the Yanks think we live in Igloos, we too have our ideas that may or may not be quite accurate.
Anyway, I'm not here to talk about cotton swabs.
Life is pretty normal here at the Ponderosa. T.C. and I made Perogies yesterday, which is something we do from time to time. And yes, when I say "we", I don't just mean "she". She did mix up the goop for the innards (a mashed potato and cheese mixture) rolled out the dough, while I put together the Perogies. Keeping ahead was the challenge, so there were times when she put down the rolling pin and made a few by hand.
We did have a couple tools at our disposal.
Sometimes it's all about the tools.
The thing on the right is this roller thingy for making perfect little circles of dough, a rolling-circle-cutter and the clam shell thing on the left is kinda self explanatory.
I swear I didn't prompt T.C. to take my picture. So fine, I'll throw it in here. We ended up making 95. This time around, we boiled them up first, then they went onto the trays after brushing on some melted butter, and then they went off to the freezer. They have to be frozen individually. Then I'll do the "seal a meal" thing.
There were maybe five or six "duds", and we put in a few extras to make eight, and had them for supper. Fry up an onion in butter, put in the Perogies, and serve with sour cream.
I'm not anywhere close to the point where I might have to go to any other store other than a grocery store. I'm still farting around with stripping the table out in the "shop". Can't say it's fun. And I suspect I'll have to get a little aggressive at some point, as first of all, it's not an antique, and my niece has mentioned that she wants to change the colour anyway. So, there won't be any attempts to "keep the patina" or any of those things you try to do to preserve the value of an antique. And yes, I've seen a few antiques just get completely ruined as the result of "good intentions".
Now mind you, I think the term "antique" has taken on some sort of hidden meaning in that, somehow there's the understanding that it's somehow "special". A piece of furniture might be old, and considered an "antique", because that's the term we use, but it may very well have been a piece of junk when it was put together. We have a couple of those. And I keep them more for function over their supposed value. We have a "wash stand" that looks like it was put together by a blind badger. Seriously. It's horrid. But, it's stayed together all these years, and functions perfectly well as a night stand in one of the spare bedrooms.
Anyway, I've heard various reports when it comes to the new "curb pick-up" efforts that some places are trying to do. Hope Despot comes to mind, but here in Canada we also have Canadian Tire and Home Hardware.
So, Home Hardware is kind of like "Ace Hardware" I suppose, and Canadian Tire has evolved into well, just about everything. They've gotten huge. There's a couple links if you want to move your eyes back and forth. Canadian Tire
And, Home Hardware
Saves me a lot of typing...
Now, a few years back, for shits and giggles, I ordered something or other from Home Hardware and went to the store to pick it up. Somehow I was expecting a situation similar to Lee Valley, (don't you just love all these links I'm putting in?) where they have an area inside the store that's kind of off on its own, where you go to pick up your stuff.
Not Home Hardware.
I had to walk the the very back of the store to "Customer Service" where, they didn't really have a clue.
So, I was a little surprised to hear from one of the "Zoomers" a few days back that Home Hardware were really doing a good job when it came to the "Curb side pick-up" thing. Who knew?
Conversely, Canadian Tire? Um, no. Reports are, they haven't figured it out. And Home Despot? Again, reports are that you'll get your order in a timely fashion once you get notified that it's ready, but that whole "getting ready" part can take days.
Well, that makes sense.
For years now, places like Lowe's and Home Depot very much depended on the customer doing all the work. You bring in a cart from outside, load it up, take it to the cash, and then load your stuff into your vehicle by yourself. Unless you ask for assistance and then have to stand around waiting for some "help" to show up.
And recently, "for your convenience" they've added "self check-out".
I don't do "self check-out" . The last time I operated a cash register, I was getting paid to do so, and was the one training the staff on just how it all worked. So unless I'm on your payroll, or you're giving me some incentive, it's not happening.
The quandary then is, do they have the staff available to fill all those orders?
Of course not. And this is why a lot of places are crying for more employees. They've been trying to screw everyone out of a job for so long, that now they are the ones getting ever so slightly buggered.
And here's another "funny one".
Some time today, T.C. is expecting to get a note saying her grocery order from Fortinos is ready for pick-up. I haven't really checked their website to see how it works, to be honest, but T.C. tells me that she had to pick a "slot", and a couple weeks ago, there were no slots available for ....two weeks.
So fine, Daughter Number One had already put in an order and T.C. was able to add some things to it, and it was picked up last week. Today will be our turn. The curious thing? Now there are boatloads of "slots". Ha!
Do you think maybe folks just decided it was too much hassle to wait two weeks to get some groceries? Hm?
Plus, folks didn't really know what to expect. Because yes, you CAN go to the store. You may think it best to wear a mask. Keep your distance for the stupids. Or tell them to get the fuck away from you. But it is possible. And surprisingly, there is in fact, toilet paper available. Along with flour and most everything else. Hair care products? Don't know. Don't care.
Have you seen my head?
Although, I may have to try and convince T.C. to come to grips with my hair clippers one of these days. I think there's a pun in there somewhere.
Thanks for stopping by.

And maybe you're thinking, "Why 95, and why would you need to know?" And, we probably would have made it to 100, except that we ran out of mix. Had to turf out the left over dough (hate doing that, but you can't use it) And as to "why"? Well, it's maybe due to T.C. being a retired CPA? Mind you, it's good to know just how many you'll end up with, but a rough guesstimate would have worked for me.

OK so, big deal sez you.
I've done this before, a number of times.
But the thing is, when I was making banana bread in Vienna, I didn't have a mixer. I know! How lame is that?
I mean, I looked at mixers in Europe, and man oh man, were they ever expensive. I found out too late that I could have ordered one on this Continent that was wired for 220 volts and 50 hz, and had it shipped with our stuff. Didn't realise we'd be missing something like that so much. Oh well.
Of course, then I would have had to figure out what the heck to do with the thing when we moved back home. I did manage to sell our washing machine, but any of the other 220 appliances, we gave to charity.
Here at the Ponderosa, we have a "stand mixer", which is simply a wonderful invention. Just....let the thing run.
I'm not sure why I hadn't been doing this more often. I suspect laziness might play a huge part?
I really, really didn't want to talk politics today, even though there are some really, really stupid things I could go on about. You know, Orange Head, Kelly Ann Conway, the Governor of Florida etc. Oh and, Bishop Gerald Glenn. You probably heard of him. And I mean, he probably has a mother, and maybe friends who will grieve his passing, but really?
Just don't be saying stupid shit. Because you just never know. Well, I'm sure he's in "a better place", or at least he thought he was going to one. That's all that matters.
There's been a couple pastors that have...wait for it...passed on. See what I did there?
That's about all I got today. We did do a little road trip this morning, first for a "porch pick-up" of some sewing supplies for T.C. and then to drop off a birthday present and some masks at one of T.C.'s sisters. Keeping a safe distance of course. My only slight concern? I'd have to make sure that my bladder wouldn't be nagging me at any point in the journey, as any of the go to stop off places would be off limits. All Tim Horton's and McDonald's only have their drive throughs open, so there's no going in for what I like to refer to as a "McShit". And of course, there was no using the facilities at the sewing place, nor at the sister's-in-law.
Coulda got ugly.
As a side note, any time we were in a foreign location when we lived in Europe, I would always look for the "Golden Arches", as I knew there were toilets available. You might have to cough up fifty Euro cents for the privilege, but at least they were clean.
And with that thought, I'll bid you a pleasant evening.
Keep that stick on the ice.
Thanks for stopping by. And wash your hands!

I see dumb people.
What was that movie where the little boy kept saying, "I see dead people"? "The sixth sense", as it turns out.
Anyway, today T.C. and I had to go out. Not to be taken lightly, but there was need for a few things for the weekend. One of the stores that we have around here is a place called "Denninger's". It's actually "Denninger's Foods of the World", but we only use the shortened version.
There are only five locations around these parts, and they have their own manufacturing facility where they make a lot of their own products, such as sausages etc.
Most times I think one pays a little more than maybe at a regular store, but the quality is always there.
I naively thought she was going on her own, but I was sadly mistaken. There was the possibility of calling in an order and having them bring it out to the car, but that would have meant that someone on the other end would have to pick up the damned phone.
Besides, T.C. said she wanted to pick out her own stuff anyway. So fine, I waited in the car, and in she went. And by the way, that whole "I waited in the car and in she went" protocol would be exactly the same whether there was a pandemic or not.
Just wanted to let you know.
I shop, or she shops. We typically do not shop together. Just...a thing.
Interesting arrangement. The store that is. They had squirrelled away most of the carts, so that there were only enough carts for as many people as they were going to allow in at any given time. What that number was, I have no clue, but I was quite surprised that T.C. didn't have to wait outside, the way it seems to go with most places right about now. There was a cart available, freshly wiped down, and off she went.
Then of course, I get to watch all the clever folks coming out. Some wore masks. Some wore masks and gloves. Masks I'm OK with. You want to wear a mask? Go for it. Just don't touch it. Don't touch your face. So there's this one old guy (OK fine, maybe he's my age, but I'm sure he was older) He comes out with his bags of stuff, he's wearing gloves and a mask. And I'm thinking, "Well there you go, good for you."
He gets in the car after putting his stuff in the back seat, and THEN takes off the gloves, and takes off his mask.
And you might be thinking, "Well, so?".
See, once upon a time, when we were trained on cleaning up blood and "blood products" (not sure what the hell that was supposed to be, but whatever) we were trained in a special way as to how to take off gloves so as not to get the contaminant on your person. There's a trick to it. And, if you're NOT wearing gloves, you need to wash your hands or use sanitiser BEFORE you touch anything. Or get into your car, touching your steering wheel, and so on. Alternatively, you take off the gloves before getting into the car etc.
Not only that, but then he proceeds to touch his face. Like, wipe his nose with the back of his hand. And I'm just sitting there shaking my head.
I managed to not yell it out, but I'm sure I said, "Dude, you just missed the whole point!"
There were more examples, but I'm starting to get really agitated here.
In other news, T.C. saw a "bug". Well, really it was some tiny little moth like creature that was flying around up in the office, but somehow it was in our food.
Some how.
I heard this...rustling and crinkling of plastic, and thought maybe I'd investigate.
Right. Everything had to come out of the pantry.
The good news is, we did get rid of some Couscous and Quinoa from, I don't know, years ago. Along with some other mystery packets of rice. Oh and, these tiny little packets of gelatin. Gelatin? Huh?
And? No bugs.
You have to understand that, one cannot simply dismiss this sort of thing. Best to go along. I made sure I was checking the cereal as instructed. It too was bug free.
I'm reasonably certain that the little moth like flying thing has more to do with springtime on the way, and not something we brought in from a store. Or that is lying in wait with his multitude of friends, ready to take over the house.
Hope y'all are staying safe.
Thanks for stopping by.

Well, I had to do it.
Go out, that is.
I think there was a slight welling up of panic when I realised that the coffee container that I was about to empty was not the second last one, but the last one!
Gah!
Gotta step up my game when it comes to knowing what I have in store, as I thought I had a spare. I always have a spare.
So, I sucked it up and went to Costco. And I must say, they've figured it out.
First of all, I did have to go out early Monday morning, as we were getting down on the bread end of things, and the store down the street had an hour set aside for "old folks" from seven to eight. AND, unlike the store where T.C. had to go to last week, these guys had a security guard at the entrance way, sort of eyeing everyone on their way in so as to make sure they were in fact seniors.
Apparently, I qualify. No need for I.D.
Not sure if that should sadden me or not.
And it was not crowded in the least.
I made sure to profusely thank all the employees for being there that early.
Anyway, Costco also has an hour set aside before they open, from eight until nine on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for seniors but unfortunately, I didn't get that memo in time, so I went for normal hours.
Not a huge deal.
I naively grabbed a cart from one of the corrals to take in with me, but that wasn't needed, as they were sanitising all the carts just as you went in, so no need for the gloves or wipes on my part. AND, they had two distinct areas/lines set up, divided by piles of skids, so as to separate those going in, from those coming out. We did have to line up, with everyone far enough apart for proper distancing etiquette. Plus, there was a bit of a wait, as they were only allowing a certain number of shoppers in at once. I read somewhere that the number was 50, but don't quote me.
Then it was pretty much easy peasy from then on, as they had everything that was on my list. And no, I didn't need toilet paper, although I did see that they had boatloads.
Then, coming out, there were two distinct lines to get up to the check out area, with hash marks on the floor as a reminder of proper distancing etiquette once again. It was very orderly. Didn't have to put my groceries on the belt. Had a spot to stand as it was being rung up, the cashier scanned my Costco card from about six feet away (a bit of overkill I thought) and I only really had to come in contact with the payment terminal, which her assistant had just wiped down. I had sanitiser with me and gave my hands a going over after all that as well.
Oh and, they didn't do that whole checking off your crap against your receipt thing either. I never did understand that. Like they're able to tell if you've got all your goods? Really? Or that you somehow miraculously were able to slip an extra huge bag of flour onto your cart?
They had removed one of the terminals at each end of the line of terminals in order to make extra room. This was a welcome change from the way it had always been, where your cart goes one way, and you're forced into an area next to the other member behind you. I never did like that.
And, as I said to the cashier, I've never liked it when fellow shoppers get too close to me anyway, so I was completely good with the whole situation. Like, beyond happy. Thinking up catchy T-shirt captions, that sort of thing.*
I think I first started to notice folks being too close to me when we lived in Puerto Rico, as fellow shoppers were forever getting well into my comfort zone. Thankfully, I'm taller than most Puerto Ricans, so I never got any of the head colds that always seemed to be going around. That's also probably where I really started to become a bit of a Germaphobe.
Or maybe even before that? Not sure.
Oh, speaking of which, and this was the only time I actually spoke with another shopper, while standing in line, I couldn't help but notice what I think was a lady who, for what can only be due to paranoia, was basically covered from head to toe in plastic. She had plastic bags on her feet, some sort of plastic bag on her torso. Plastic bags on each leg. A mask, and the obligatory plastic bag on her head.
I so wish I had taken my camera.
Oh and, she was lining her cart with newspaper! Newspaper!
Because apparently them spraying down all the carts just before they give you one wasn't enough, and somehow you can get a virus through your feet?
The floors were so clean you could eat off them. And I dare say, as a result of some of the over the top efforts of just about any place you can think of, floors in public places these days are probably cleaner than most people's houses!
So, the guy in front of me saw this at about the same time as me, turned to me, said not a word. But I had to say, "OK, there's being prepared, and then there's being paranoid."
But hey, whatever floats yer boat. I mean, you can cut up an onion, put it in your bedroom, and as long as you never leave your bedroom, you'll never get sick.
True.
It probably works just as well with watermelon, but they'd need to be in season.
No plans to go anywhere for a few days again, as I'll head to the wine making place to pick up our new supply on Tuesday. I was going to go today, but let me just say, it's surprising just how often one relies on one's back muscles for the simplest things?
No big deal. I've done this before. Just happened to bend down the wrong way, and ouch!
I'll be better by Tuesday I'm sure. Just...putting on socks this morning was....a chore.
Annoyingly, I have a few things in the house that need shifting around, which normally T.C. and I could manage together, so that's out the window. Plus of course, I can't even call on one of the Daughter Units or Sons-in-law to come help, as we don't want to have anyone come to the house.
Thanks for stopping by.
Keep your stick on the ice.
And wash your hands.
*I'm thinking of a caption like, "Now I can say it. Get the f**k away from me!"

As the stomach turns.
Well kids, looks like the idiots are in full panic mode. Reports are the stores are whacko, but these are second hand reports as, being a Pensioner, I don't go to the store on a Thursday night, or any other time when the Worker Bees are in need of a good shop.
Saw one of my long time Facebook friends commenting on the line-ups at one place (on Facebook, of course), and moments later, got a call from Daughter Number One saying she and hubby went in that store, took a look at the lines, turned around and left.
I did go to Costco on Wednesday for the usual. Milk, bread, cream and....toilet paper. But, Costco is where I do buy toilet paper, unless it's on sale at Food Basics, just down the street from us. There was a bit of nuttiness in the toilet paper aisle, but nothing like I've seen on the news.
I was actually a little embarrassed to be buying toilet paper, as I really didn't want to be part of "that crowd". I can't figure out if the ones that were buying two and three bales, are actually running variety stores and selling it at a profit? If you think you're going to have the shits that bad to need that much toilet paper, there's going to be other issues. Besides, when it comes out like that, it's kind of a "self cleaning" situation.
But let's not go down that rabbit hole. Is that a pun?
Not sure.
Anyhoo, I think Daughter Number one was trying to get some guidance as to whether or not they should stick to their plans to go to Cabo San Lucas in a couple weeks. She didn't really come out and ask the Old Man (that wouldn't be cool) but it was one topic of discussion. The flight down is direct, but the return leg has a stop over in the US. That could be problematic. The flight cancellation wouldn't be too much of a concern, as many of the airlines are waving their fees in that regard, but they've paid for the villa already. Ain't gonna get that mulla back.
Now to some other (more sane) news:
Work continues in the painting department. I ain't no ball of fire, I'll tell you that much. I suspect I put in a good solid three or four hours some days, and then I get a little tired or hungry, and my motivation begins to suffer. Admittedly, there have been a couple times when I've done a wee bit in the evening, just to finish off a section.
And we made a discovery.
See, Travelling Companion had this idea that "we" want to replace the fridge that I've now moved to paint behind. So fine, we did some looking on the usual sites, settling on a model from Costco. Wasn't about to pull the trigger any time soon however. The idea was, that the fridge is "really noisy", and if we're going to be putting the day bed down there for an extra sleeping area, then it "has to go".
Plus, it seemed to be running way too much.
Except, when I moved it about five feet, sort of around the corner from the kitchen area, I immediately noticed that, not only was it heaps quieter, but that it also wasn't coming on nearly as often.
Huh?
I even thought that perhaps it had stopped working, and decided to check on it. Nope, running just fine.
Well see, where it had been sitting, it's not entirely level. I didn't think being slightly off kilter would make such a huge difference. Apparently it does.
This is a fridge that we bought second hand almost 20 years ago, and it's been chugging away down there all this time. So, having a new fridge would definitely help in terms of energy conservation. I'm just not too sure how long it would take to save that five or six hundred dollars in electricity costs.
I suspect, another 20 years..
Anyway, hope y'all are doing well. Self isolating and all. Turns out, I've been self isolating for years and years.
Who knew?
Thanks for stopping by.

Well, that was a "fun" day.
Just checking in here. You may have to move your eyes back and forth a bit.
For years now, I've been driving around (in several different countries as well, but you know that) relatively unscathed when it comes coming into contact with other vehicles. There have been a few close calls, like a couple weeks ago when someone (never did see the driver) decided to come out of a parking garage without looking, and was within about a foot of my driver's door before the light went on, realising that there was someone there. I was laying on the horn the whole time. It was a "retirement residence", so your guess is as good as mine.
Now, that was in downtown Burlington. I think maybe I need to stay out of the downtown or something, but we need to go there once a week to get to the Pub. I mean, there are some things I ain't gonna give up.
Anyhoo, last Thursday (Oh and, Happy belated Thanksgiving to our American friends) I was once again in the downtown, tooling along, minding my own business, when a garbage truck driver decided to fling open his door to go back and help his buddy do their thing. Unfortunately, his timing was spot on. Well that is, if he HAD been aiming to drive his door into the side of my truck. Isn't there a thing about, "Be sure and check for traffic before opening your door.? Well, he didn't.
It's actually kinda hard to make out in those pics, I suspect due to it being a white truck.
Anyhoo, there's a big ole crease on the passenger door, the mirror is obliterated, and the window is kinda scratched to shit. Oh, and there's the beginnings of a crease on the second door too. That sticker there is from the cop shop, letting everyone know that yes, pictures have been taken.
Funny thing is, when I called the insurance company, at some point the young lady on the phone asked, "Do you have the mirror?".
*Snort*! Um, there was nothing left of the mirror!
After waiting for "The Supervisor" and sorting out all the information, we picked up the bits and threw it all in the back of the garbage truck. The door of the garbage truck? Well, it was bent up pretty good as well, and couldn't be opened. (So at least the driver won't be opening his door into traffic for the rest of his shift?)
Interestingly, although most of the handle is missing on the Tundra, the door was still operable.
One thought that I had was, "What if I had been riding a bicycle?" I mean, I nearly got "doored" once in Vienna, but that door wasn't at chest height, such as was the case with the garbage truck. I suspect I would have been in the hospital, or worse.
It's in the shop. The estimate was thirty-six hundred.
I know! I thought maybe a couple grand, but I suppose it adds up. The parts have been ordered and should arrive today. And here's something interesting, the insurance company only gives the body shop seven days to put it right after the parts arrive. Maybe that's because I have a rental that they're paying for??
Speaking of which, it's a mini-van. And, I realise we rented one a couple years ago in Maui, and that was fine and all, but I really wanted a pick-up truck. And I mean, this mini-van has a lot of little bells and whistles, (heated steering wheel, heated seats, remote start, remote operable sliding doors and rear hatch) but just the same, it's a POS.
There's something sort of rattling around in the rear suspension, which I find somewhat disconcerting. Plus, every time I start it up, it tells me it's due for an oil change. Really??
Even Travelling Companion had a somewhat less than complimentary comment in the brief time that she rode in it with me yesterday. And I hadn't said anything to influence her opinion in any way.
It's built by the people who claim to have "perfected the mini-van" after having introduced it back in 1984. Anyway, I just thought, "If this is their idea of having perfected it, I'm not sure what they've been smoking."
Of course, they're also 58% owned by Fiat, so now you know what I'm talking about.
I'll be bugging the manager over at the rental company to see if I can trade it for a truck when one shows up. Apparently they only have so many of them, and they were all out.
Well, that's my little missive for today. And maybe for a while.
Hope all is well with you lot.
Thanks for stopping by.

And we both howled.
So, you've no doubt gather by this point in time that I do tend to sit and watch an NFL game from time to time. Like, Sunday, Monday Night, and Thursday Night. I don't do college Football. Just can't get into it although, as a side note, if I were to go to a College game, I'd go see the Ohio State Buckeyes. It's not that far to travel, although an overnight would be the only possible way of doing it.
Anyhoo, last night was the Pittsburgh Steelers and Caroline Panthers. I didn't have any vested interest in the outcome, as getting my submission in to the pub would have meant stopping off there at some point prior to game time, as the young lady who is currently running the pool has been having some email "issues", shall we say? I'm just not going to even go there, as I can already feel my blood pressure going up ever so slightly. Put it this way, if the owner of the pub isn't running the pool next year? I'm out.
I'm trying to think of exactly when what I'm about to tell you all took place, but suffice to say, T.C. and were on our way from Vienna to Birmingham, and I definitely recall noticing these four rather "sketchy" looking Dudes, who were set to board the same flight as us. This was in Vienna, and we had a stop over in Frankfurt (I think).
So, sketchy looking Dudes get on the plane in Vienna, not sure where they sat, but basically I sort of forgot about them. (Kind of like the way I'm having trouble recalling the whole thing btw)
On that leg of the flight, T.C. and I got to sit together. Yay!
Then we get to our stop over, the second leg of which would take us on to Birmingham, and who is also getting on the plane?
Sketchy looking Dudes.
THIS TIME, T.C. and don't get to sit together (who knows why?) and who is sitting next to T.C.? One of the sketchy Dudes, who proceeds to start up a conversation with T.C. showing her his adorable kids, wife etc. Actually, I think he was a bit homesick and was looking at their pics on his mobile device, and I think maybe T.C. noticed or something? Anyway, I was later told that they had a lovely conversation. Nicest guy ever, etc.
He and his sketchy looking buddies had been on tour it seems and they were making one or two more stops and then going on home to California.
OK fine, we get to Birmingham, and the Sketchy Dudes (and there is a fifth guy, their Roadie I presume) are in a bit of a panic, as their luggage is somewhat MIA. It did turn up, but the reason that they were getting a little stressed was, their costumes were in their luggage!
It turns out that they were a musical group (a loose definition of "music" by the way) that call themselves Steel Panther. And their "shtick" is something called "Glam Rock".
And no, I had never heard of it either.
If you don't care to go to the website, I'll stick a photo in here real quick like:
Well, first of all, it seems they have a huge following, AND they're still at it.
See, I don't usually tune in to all the "NFL Pre-Game" nonsense, but at the last minute I tune in to see Michael Strahan and company, and whom are they talking to? Well, think about it. Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers?
Ya, those guys! I just about came off my couch!
I had to run upstairs and tell T.C.!! Oh man. Too funny.
Oh, and by the way, there's only one of them who has his own hair. The other three with the bandannas are wearing wigs. That's the biggest reason they were freaking out when their luggage was MIA. Those Dudes are like....bald!
You just never know whom you're going to see in an airport. Or...whom you sit next to. Or what different kind of "entertainment" there is out there!
Can't make this stuff up. Honest to God.
Thanks for stopping by.

I think I got them all.
By that I mean, clocks. *rolling my eyes here*. I think I now only have to change the time in the truck.
T.C. mentioned already this morning that she had changed the time in the car.
Why do we do this again? I like "daylight saving time", or at least that's what I think it is, and switching back to "normal" time, or whatever it's called, just means that the poor working stiffs mostly now go to work in the dark, and will ultimately come home in the dark. That'll be towards mid December I realise.
That was one of the few things that I enjoyed about working afternoons once upon a time. At least I went to work when it was still light out, and came home in the dark like everyone else. No matter what time of the (school) year.
Anyway, doesn't matter too much these days, unless there's an appointment say, the first Monday after the change over.
Oh and, I read somewhere (OK well, on the internet, where else?) that the EU has voted to do away with changing clocks. So unless the higher mucky mucks can't agree on following through on the referendum, they'll be keeping it on "summer time" all year 'round. Sounds like a decent idea.
I was going to put in a link, but the one I found had too many annoying things on it. You're welcome.
I guess that's it, really.
Back to watching football.
Thanks for stopping by.
Sticks....ice. You know.

A moratorium on dish soap.
It is not permitted, for the foreseeable future (or at least until the end of 2019 I'm thinking) to buy any more dish soap.
Oh and, a belated "Happy Halloween".
Whatever.
So here's the thing. Once again this year, Travelling Companion and I leave the house in darkness and go out to dinner on Halloween. I'm sort of on the fence when it comes to giving out candy. I don't really mind, but it usually ends up with me ignoring the doorbell, and T.C. jumping up to see what little goblin or whatever is out there looking for a hand out.
Plus, a couple years ago, I had to dash off to the store to see if I could scare up anything else to hand out, as we were running low, and I do seem to recall in previous years having so much candy left over that I'm still struggling to shed the extra pounds that I put on.
So why do this??
Anyway, for what we spent on dinner, we probably could have just HIRED someone to give out candy. More cost effective.
Plus, T.C. was saying that she felt somewhat nauseous in the middle of the night, and we're not sure what that was all about. I slept like a rock.
Maybe next year we'll stay home? We'll see.
The slight wrinkle was, we both had an appointment at the dentist at three, and then a whack of time to kill before our somewhat early dinner reservation at 6:30.
What to do?
There was a stop at Indigo (overpriced books and stuff) and then on to "Winners" where T.C. did find a pair of jeans at a decent price.
This, by the way, is at the newly revamped "Burlington Centre", which used to be simply "Burlington Mall". It's not the centre of anything, but whatever.
I don't really go there, except to go to Derringer's once in a while. They've moved from their previous somewhat inaccessible location to what is now a huge spot the now newly renovated mall.
Next stop, Costco.
Well, I think you know where we're headed.
See, whenever I stop in at Costco, which is about every six weeks or so, I rarely take a cart. I dash in, pick up the two or three items that I *know* we need (coffee comes to mind) and book it for the exit. Well, I pay first, but you know what I mean.
This time, we took a cart.
Oh boy.
T.C. had her smart phone out, with it set to the calculator function, and was dutifully checking to see if it was a "good deal" and all that, but now of course, we have at least nine full containers of Dawn dish soap. See, you have to buy a packet of three, not just one. And I guess I had bought a packet of three at some point in the last six months, even though we still had two or three tucked away already.
I'll be using it to bathe in I guess.
So if you're looking to buy shares of Proctor and Gamble, I'd say it's a good bet.
I should mention that the Boys and I did our annual pilgrimage to an NFL game on Monday. Turns out, it's the first Monday night game they've had in Buffalo for 10 years.
I think the best word to sum it up? "COLD".
It threatened to rain, which thankfully didn't amount to much, but moreover the *wind* was problematic, shall we say?
Here we are, somewhat huddled around our campfire.
Which of course, meant that I had to wash everything that I had been wearing "around the campfire", as it stunk of smoke.
I had to tie our shelter thingy to the truck to keep it from simply lifting off.
Gotta love the portability and reliability of the Weber for this sort of thing. Those too came from Costco. Good eats!
We did have an enjoyable time, but I did admit at one point when dropping off my passengers that, there were a couple moments when I was pining for my nice warm couch in front of the fire, which is my usual NFL game protocol.
The Bills lost, which was no surprise. Their quarterback situation is a bit of a clusterf**k, and in typical fashion, the Patriots come out after half time, once they've gone over a few things that they see going on with any opposing team they face, an proceed to basically crush them.
I also tend to think there's more animosity in the seats than on the field, and the notion of "rabid fans" did come to mind.
But I guess that's the nature of that particular beast.
We didn't see anyone getting booted from the proceedings this time around.
For a couple years now, maybe longer, they've had a sort of "fan snitch line" prominently displayed for all to see, and I guess it's been used enough now that the rowdier knobs know where to draw the line.
I guess. Or maybe it was just too f**king cold to throw the gloves off, so to speak.
I suspect that if/when we go next year, we just *might* pick a game a bit earlier in the season?
Either that or I need to buy some mukluks or something. All of me was toasty warm, except the feet. Not completely frozen through, but borderline uncomfortable.
Sure glad the heater in the truck is a good one.
I suppose that'll be it for me once again for a few days.
Thanks for moving your eyes back and forth.
Keep that stick on the ice.

I caught him!
For years now, and I'm talking decades here, we've been getting someone else's mail. Not every day, mind you. Just once in a while.
It all comes down to one number. Our address contains a "3", the recipients of our prodigal mail (it does come home eventually) are down the street and around the corner.
So, a week ago yesterday, there was a package left on our front doorstep from some place called "Well.ca". Didn't look like anything I had ordered.
And as a matter of fact, I have nothing on order.
Of course it wasn't ours, so I hopped on the bike and made the delivery.
Oh, there's a bit of a 'back story' to this. See, once upon a time, the folks at that other address were Mr. and Mrs. Helm (no relation to "Matt")
I recall Daughter Number Two telling me that, when she and her hubby were living here during the time that we lived in Europe, Mr. Helm would come by from time to time to deliver our mail. They'd do an exchange, as we likely had some of his as well. Usually "Chatelaine" magazine that Mrs. Helm had on order. Don't judge.
Sadly, I remember her telling me one time that, poor Mr. Helm was getting really old and weary, and was having difficulty even getting out of his car, let alone making it up our front steps. Then, a couple years ago by now I think it was, Mr. Helm passed away, and Mrs. Helm was the only one whose mail we were getting.
Then, a couple months ago, I couldn't help but notice a "for sale" sign on the front lawn, and now there are new owners.
I don't think they realise that it was me who delivered their package last week?
We'll introduce ourselves at some point I'm sure.
Anyway, this morning there was a knock on the front door, at which point I raced to the front door thinking perhaps my sister-in-law, who lives up the street and around the corner, might have got caught in the rain or perhaps needed to use the facilities.
Nope.
It was "Delivery Dude", who is under contract with Canada Post, and he had left a package from Amazon. Of course, didn't have my glasses on, and he had darted off before I could wave him back anyway.
Sure enough. Not for this address. But I thought, "Dammit, I'm gonna race off and see if I can catch him". Figuring that, even if I couldn't track him down, at least he went in the direction of the proper recipients, and I'd drop the package off anyway.
And like I just said, it was raining like you wouldn't believe!
And I saw him! He was just finishing up another package delivery on one of the side streets, and I think as soon as he saw me, because maybe he recognised the vehicle, he came right to my window. We had a little chat. He was apologetic. He was also getting soaked. I tried to be brief. I didn't quite go to the point of trying to explain the difference between '3' and '4', but he got the idea.
I suspect that, as long as he's the guy delivering the boxes around here, I won't have to make any more deliveries.
Now, the actually postal workers? That's a different story.
I've managed to chase down the odd one in the past, but it's tricky. They're too surreptitious. And by the time I've sifted through the dregs of junk mail to see if I actually got anything, they're long gone.
In other "news", I thought I'd try one of those copper BBQ mats again, only this time to cook a couple eggs.
Meh. Still not the greatest. I know that when it comes to using a frying pan, I like to cover the eggs, which allows them to start to skin over on top before getting crusty on the bottom.
I'm not overly keen on that crusty bit.
I even tried another couple eggs later in the evening, figured maybe I'd cover them with the lid to a pot. The only one that I had that would fit over the eggs was this glass thing, and it started to make these cracking noises, which was freaking me out, so I took it off. Breaking one of the lids to our pots would be "no bueno".
So, those eggs in that photo above look really perfect BUT, they stuck to the surface (not supposed to) and were way too crusty on the bottom when I was trying to flip them. Just a mess, really. Edible, but sad looking.
Maybe it would work better on a BBQ, as opposed to a grill? I give up.
I'll stick to using the cast iron bit that goes over the grill for anything like bacon or eggs that I want to cook outside.
Meanwhile, I've finished yet another wall, and have two (?) more of that colour to go. Of course, with it being so overcast and rainy, I may have to bring in one of my gazillion candle power work lamps, which I'm not keen on using due to the amount of heat given off, but whatever.
Gotta get at it.
Um, it looks like two different shades, but that's just due to the flash.
Thanks for stopping by.

I just shake my head.
What I wanted to say was, "Are ya stoopid??", but I didn't want that in the title.
See, "we" have been talking about this ice storm for a few days now. Even if you don't have cable (many don't including both Daughters Numbers One and Two) and cannot watch "The Weather Network" (which, by the way, not unlike CNN, you only need to watch for about 15 minutes, and then you've got all the information that they'll ever be giving for a time) you're still going to know *somehow* that there's a storm coming and...wait for it....that you should stay off the roads.
But no....
I give you, Exhibit A:
Because, isn't there like, Twitter, and Facebook and I don't know what else? It's not that hard to know what's going on with the weather.
Better yet, just look outside.
I cropped out the "gentleman" standing off to the side there. Personally, I think I'd be too embarrassed to have my photo taken standing beside the car I had just upended. But that's just me I guess.
How do you even get going fast enough to put it over on its side anyway??
Oh and, there's WAY more snow/ice/whatever on the ground now. Like, the snow plow just went by this morning.
That photo was from yesterday, and the storm has continued on into today (Sunday).
T.C. had originally planned to take her sister to church in Hamilton.
Not happening.
The Merc is pretty good in snow and ice, (it's that "all wheel drive" thing) but the trick would be getting TO or FROM the vehicle, as all surfaces are a sheet of ice.
I haven't even considered stepping out the back door. Probably sequester myself downstairs, make a fire and bang away at the guitar. Or honk away at the Saxomophone.
(Yes, I own an alto Saxophone, shut up.)
I *used* to play, (like, I even knew all the key signatures and shit) and as a casual aside a few years back, I mentioned that I wouldn't mind picking it up again. Lo and behold, T.C. bought me a sax for Christmas! Holy Crap! Now I have to really *do* something!
It didn't take me long to discover that, even though I can still "play" the thing, not having picked up a wind instrument in some 30 years means really not being able to play for anything more than a few minutes.
It's hard work!
The muscle memory still seems to be there, so it's not like I'm honkin' and squeekin' like someone in Grade Seven Music or anything, but still....
OK, so now I'm just starting to do some sort of "stream of consciousness" thing.
I'll go now.
Thanks for stopping by. No more outside pics. Not doing anyone any good at all.
Keep your stick on the ice.

Dealing with Boneheads.
Not that that is anything out of the ordinary of course, but today we've had a bit of time wasted doing just that. I said to Travelling Companion, "What if you were working, and had to deal with this?"
The answer is: probably wouldn't.
There were a couple things. My little "thing" was, we had a recall a while back on the dishwasher. For some strange reason, the very clever engineers decided to make the electrical connection "hard wired". Well, the previous model had a plug, which meant putting in a GCFI outlet in the next door cabinet and plugging the thing in. Then, fifteen years later, that machine had to be replaced, and the new Bosch wasn't like that. Both "German" companies by the way, but seemly Bosch USA had a different idea. Hard wired.
Fine. But apparently, some customers were experiencing overheated cords, and there was a recall.
This tells me that whoever was hooking the things up had very little clue as to what was required, but whatever.
So, we had the Service Dude come out, changed over the cord etc. Of course, I had to redo his installation, since he f**ked that up but, whatever.
One of the reasons I tend to not let trades people in the house. I'm a bit funny that way.
Then in today's mail, I get a "Second Recall Notice". "Urgent!" I'm like, "What?"
Well, it's from the same Boneheads. I called them.
And you have to understand, I really could have just turfed the letter in the round file (well, these days it's blue/recycling, and rectangular) but I thought I'd phone anyway, just to torture myself.
There's no direct connection of course. You have to press a bunch of buttons before speaking with an actual person, who then simply told me to ignore the letter.
"So we're done, right?" was my only question. And I'm guessing here, but my suspicion is that, the very fine folks who sent a "Service Dude" to the house didn't bother to let The Mothership know what had been done. Wouldn't that be part of the process? Don't they want to get paid?
On another front, completely different, both T.C. and I have these fancy schmancy electric toothbrushes that are supposed to do all sorts of wonderful things.
Problem is, T.C. has been finding the odd bristle in her mouth after brushing her teeth.
No bueno.
So she spent the better part of an hour "live chatting" with a Bonehead from another company. No resolution to that one. There were a bunch of minuscule part numbers given and the outcome was, "Our Safety representative will contact you within the next five business days".
They have a "Safety Representative"? That sounds like a load of fresh air if I ever heard one.
Now, onto Bonehead Number Three.
I'm looking to purchase a new camera. So fine, Daughter Number One and I went into a camera shop across town over a week ago to take a gander. I had gone with her back in November to have a look see for a camera she was about to receive from her company in recognition of ten years service. Nice arrangement, I thought. Of course, I got a little bit of "camera envy" (this is why I stay away from camera and stereo shops, but whatever) and might have mentioned this particular affliction once we came back home that day.
oooo....look at all that "stuff"!
*ahem*
Where was I?
Then like magic, Travelling Companion gave me a rather generous gift card from said camera shop for Christmas.
I wasn't dropping hints. Honest. But...I am hard to buy for. Or so I'm told. Socks, underwear, and funky t-shirts are pretty much the norm when it comes to my "Christmas List". And by the way, I''m never thrilled with a "Christmas List", but that's beside the point.
Hey, I even asked for and received bungee cords this year. I kid you not.
We go, we take a look.
Nothing to stop me now. Turns out, there's a 'used' model on their website. I'm intrigued. The used model and their three year warranty (normally I don't drink that koolaid, but it's used and the warranty covers a lotta stuff) still comes in well over a hundred bucks cheaper than a new model. But, they have to "bring it in".
Along with that, I'm considering a flash to go on the hot shoe of the small Canon I have, as the flash on that camera died a sad death one day on the boat. Long story, let's not go there. Something to do with water, let's just say?
The model of flash that I want is ALSO not on the premises, and has to be "brought in".
Helpful young salesperson orders both items from ....wherever. The warehouse? Another location? Not sure. Don't care.
And, I get a call last week saying the camera is there. "Great! And what about the flash?"
*silence*
I explained that, I'm across town, would prefer not to make two trips. They have another delivery this week.
OK so, we wait. Because you know, it'll be in today's shipment, right?
Today, I called. Yup, the camera is (still) there, but that flash? Well, there's only three in the whole bloody system (this is a national chain) and all three of them are either spoken for, or something else that the fellow on the phone mumbled. Apparently Canon hasn't released any yet this year.
Da f**k?
Not sure why this wasn't explained last week when we had our last conversation. I just figured I wouldn't make two trips, but had I known this flash was coming on a slow boat from China, I would have my camera by now. Good thing I'm not going anywhere, like on a trip or anything.
I think I'll just go for a little walk down to the grocery store. Try not to slip on the ice. You know, relaxing like.
Thanks for stopping by and letting me vent.
Keep your stick on the ice.

Thought I'd lost my house keys.
So, yesterday was a fairly normal Friday for around these parts. Piddled around for most of the day, had a brief nap in the afternoon, checked with Daughter Number One to see if she wanted to go with me to the Pub ( and the answer was no, she was still "poolside" at a Friends house and wasn't about to disturb that particular moment of zen) so then off I went.
Oh, by the way, T.C. is away for a few days, as she and one of her sisters who lives in Guelph had gone off to London to catch up with some old school chums, one of whom is a jazz singer, and was going to be performing Thursday night.
I'll be darned if I can remember her name, but whatever.
And that's London, Ontario. Not that other one.
By the way, these are chums who have known each other since grade seven I think? A bit of a long time.
Anyhoodle, had a nice visit at the Pub. It's a fairly regular bunch of what I refer to as "Pub Buddies" even though we all know each other mostly from previous work experience. There was a bit of a follow up to the Terry Fox run that took place last Sunday, where I and a host of others volunteered our Sunday (early..) morning to sit at the registration tables and make sure everything was tickety-boo.
Which by the way, we must have done a pretty good job of doing, as the key person who looks after us was all done and had joined us for a libation by about 1:30 that afternoon. I think that was a bit of a record. Things have to "balance", and if that doesn't happen, it's 'no bueno'.
And then of course, the bulk of the rest of the discussion mostly has to do with the NFL and the pool that several of us participate in.
Alas, this year I'm sort of sucking a big ole weanie, with a dismal start of only a couple points.
Just...pitiful.
We usually wind things up after a couple hours, and part ways.
I came back home, as I still had some left overs to consume.
For the last quite some time now, I've been really really careful when it comes to any sort of alcomohol consumption and then getting behind the wheel, and it just so happens that this particular Pub has a couple examples of alcohol free beer. All of which are actually pretty good. I had had alcohol free beer once upon a time maybe 15 (?) years ago, and it was, how shall I put this? Pretty bad.
So much so that we very nearly sent it off to the Veterinary College up in Guelph, and I'm sure they would have conceded that our horse was in perfect health....
(Old joke, never mind)
I'm not about to name names, except for the one that I like, and will typically consume if either I'm the DD, or if I'm by myself. It's "Clausethaler". And it took me a few weeks before I could remember that name, and eventually I had to somehow associate it with the notion that I'm somewhat claustrophobic. Nothing to do with beer, just word association.
Hey, ya gotta do, whatcha gotta do....
Of course, by the time I get home, alcohol free beer or no, I most definitely need to get myself to the bathroom. (Sorry, "restroom" for you yanks)
Only thing? I could NOT find my house keys. Oh boy...
Doesn't help when Mr. Bladder is starting to complain. Like...big time.
There are a couple ways to get into this house without necessarily having key in hand. I think everyone either has, or should have some way of getting into their domicile without having to go to extremes.
Can't really say what the method is here in a public forum, and it's not exactly like "Jack Benny's Vault", but close.
Also something that can make it a bit of a challenge with a bladder that's really, really not willing to wait much longer.
I do feel obliged to say, I made it.
Barely.
And then began to wonder, just what the heck had I done with those keys? I was sure I had taken them, and began to rethink/retrace etc., the previous couple hours.
I had definitely not taken them into the Pub with me. That would make no sense. So they had to either be in the truck, or where else I wasn't sure.
After having gone through the nooks and crannies of the truck (hey, found some random coinage!) and come in and out of the house a couple time in full search mode, I just happened to notice them lying on the grass about mid point between the door to the shed and the driveway.
I guess, after I had toddled over to the shed to close the door, I must have dropped them.
Bonehead.
So much for the confessional. I hope to not repeat that little episode for a long while. And sadly, I had been doing very well in the "keeping tabs on my shit" department, going back to some nearly twenty years ago when I thought I had lost a set of school keys (the HORROR!) only to discover that they had fallen into one of my boots in the hall closet. Wasn't wearing those boots in the hot summer weather, so they had been "lost" for a couple months. I stopped taking school keys home with me after that. Just had one to get into the building, and that was on the same ring as vehicle keys. So, unless I walked to work (not likely) I could always get into the building.
It's all a matter of building in that whole "how to make it idiot proof" thing. At least in my case. Your mileage may differ.
Thanks for stopping by.

Saturday, October 1, 2016
Here it is October, and I've been mute.
Seems that most of anything I have to say revolves around "stuff" around the house. Hate to say it consumes most of my time, but that does tend to be the way it goes.
We've been having a bit of a blow for the last few days, including a whack of rain. There has been flooding. Thankfully not affecting us. I'd like to think I've taken all the steps necessary to mitigate any flooding here at the Ponderosa, but we're in a neighbourhood where the storm drains and sewer drains all FLOW TOGETHER. No bueno. Resolving that issue would be a somewhat major undertaking I would think. It'll never happen.
Now, in spite of the huge system that has been dumping on us, there was a break in the rain yesterday long enough for me to finish off yet another project.
Yes, we now have a section of fence between us and our neighbour. There's a plan afoot to put some sort of plant there that needs not only lots of sun, but also something to grow against. "Wisteria", I think it was? Not my department, although I'll likely be pressed into service to plant the thing.
Oh, and when I say "finished", I'm not. There will be more of this type of fence, going along the front. Next year. Can't wait! Not.
The neighbour's son came over to compliment me on the look of the thing, and I did say that I'd not recommend this particular activity as "a hobby". It's taken me several days, my goal being to put in one panel a day. By "son", I mean a dude who is about my age, as his Mom, who lives next door on her own, is most certainly in her early eighties. So her "kids" come by fairly regularly to help out. He cuts the grass.
And being on the corner is one of the reasons for the fence. It would be nice to have an extended garden, without the thought of someone (usually kids) deciding to take a shortcut across the corner.
The security cameras have definitely been a deterrent in that regard, or at least that has been my impression.
Hey, I'm not about to sit there watching hours of footage to see if anyone has had to nerve to take a short cut. It's usually only if there are definite signs, like footprints in the snow, or depressions in a way too soft spring lawn. Or, when someone is permitted to step on my brand new downspout! Still pissed about that, but that's another story. I think it was someones small child, but that was before the cameras went in, and I can only guess from the tiny footprints in the snow.)
And yes, there are a bunch of rocks there next to the house (in the "back alley") that I need to sort out. I'm thinking there will be a rock garden somewhere out towards the corner.
There was a guy (neighbour I'm guessing) who came by last year some time and offered to "take them off my hands", but he also didn't offer any money, so that was that. Turns out, rocks ain't "free", even though I did go and collect them off a farmer's rock pile, and he was happy to be rid of them, my time and fuel might just be worth something. Go to the local building supplier and check out the cost of granite. You'll faint. Seems to me I said something like, "That much for freakin' rocks?" and decided to try and go off and collect my own. Needed them for the pillars I built.

Supposed to go sailing tomorrow. Not too sure about that. That lake looks pretty damned angry right about now. I'd prefer that the last sail of the season not be the worst sail of the season? Just saying.
Maybe we'll just meet for a cold beverage and a few snacks.
That's about it for the time being. Thanks for stopping by. Keep those sticks on the ice.

Yay! I didn't have to shovel!
And that, Ladies and Gentleman, is a sad sad thing to say when you’re
almost half way through April.
Unless you’re in Tuktoyaktuk, or some place like that. Somehow though, I suspect if you live in “Tuk”, as it’s known locally, you don’t even bother trying to shovel out. You either have a four by four or a snow machine.
But I wouldn't know.
Personally, I’ve never been to Tuktoyaktuk, (I just love saying that out loud), but one of my older brothers used to go up there with the Canadian Air Force. Something to do with Norad or the DEW line. or some such thing. He’s a great one for telling stories too. None of them far fetched either.
Some of those northern outposts, airports in particular, have a certain way of doing things. Like when the guy in the coveralls who is going around tidying up the place, turns out to be your pilot.
Remember that show Wings, from back in the early 90s? Kind of like that, only with far fewer personnel.
But I digress.
We had some more snow last night, and I thought for sure I’d be out there this morning, shovel in hand, trying not to keel over. But whatever was on the driveway and walkways has melted.
Pretty exciting!
Not.
Now it’s just cold and dreary. It’s above freezing mind you, but still generally crappy. Not sure when the forecast is going to be less crappy either.
I’ve gotten tired of looking.
Couldn't help but notice this poor little bastard. He doesn’t look very comfortable.
Anyway, it’s been a frustrating few days in the electronics department here at the Ponderosa.
Just this morning I had to ship back a Home Theatre Receiver to Amazon after the thing would no longer produce any sound. Acted suspiciously like there was a cold solder joint somewhere on the amp side of things, but I've only had it a few weeks, so it went back.
There was an offer to send a replacement, but it would first of all be “4-6 weeks”, and then if it’s the same model, who’s to say it won’t have the same problem?
The thing is, Ive been a long time fan of Yamaha Receivers, as I have an old beasty that I bought in 1975 that still works like a charm. It’s been relegated to the garage mind you, but it still works.
Of course, it was three times the cost of the one I bought from Amazon, (and in 1975 dollars!) probably due to the fact that it was made by folks who actually knew what they were doing? Not sure. So now I'm in a quandary as to what to buy.
Might have to go over to Onkyo, although, after just now reading some of the problems with a number of their products, I'm not sure about that choice now either. *groan*.
Thus begins another “quest” for a decent product at a good price. This could take a while. I might have to break down and actually go to a proper stereo shop.
How “Old School”.
Now, that wasn't the only thing that crapped out in the last little while.
Friday morning at about 12:30, T.C. woke me up to report that the DVR for the security cameras was beeping. I was out cold at that point and hadn't heard a thing.
In my half awake stupor, I couldn't seem to come up with any other solution other than just shutting the damned thing off, and then took a closer look in the morning.
After some in depth analysis, all the while on the phone with the Lorex Dude, we determined that the Hard Drive was indeed pooched. So IT’S going back. I'm just waiting to hear from them, and might yet give them a call later today, since I want them to send me the replacement so I’ll have a box in which to send the other one back. There was some talk of taking my credit card number, much in the same way you reserve a rental car, just in case I have amnesia and forget to send the defective one back? I didn't think that would be a problem.
We’ll see how that all pans out.
Fun stuff huh?
Talk about “First World Problems”.
