And a wet vac.And a compressor helped as well.

I've had a "fun" week. Nothing major really, just a bit of a fight with the washing machine. And Dammit, I wasn't going to phone a repair man.

So, there I am, lounging in front of the idiot box, with the sound of a load of laundry coming from out in the hallway (whatever you call that area where we have our laundry facilities and boiler) when I hear, "beep beep beep". And then, "beep beep beep". I mute the TV and no, it's not coming from the TV. It's the washing machine. And the display indicates, "E20". Da hell? Didn't need to look in the manual at first to realise that, something was seriously wrong.

Didn't think to take a picture right away, but this is after I had already started cleaning up the mess. Took out the drawer under the cabinet, so as to place a bucket under the clean out.

Can you see the feathers on the door?

Yup, washing a pillow. It exploded.

Can't think of anyone whom I dislike enough to wish this upon. Seriously. Not a fun time.

I've become intimately familiar with the workings of a front load washing machine. Unlike a top loader, where there's one drum and an agitator (where your knickers are likely to get wrapped around the spindle) a front loader has an inner drum (the spinny bit) and a water tight outer drum.
Of course, 95% of the feathers were trapped between the inner and outer drums.
Maybe a repair man (person?) would opt to take apart the two, but trust me, it would be a major undertaking. Probably would cost more than what the machine is worth.
And at first, it was so packed with feathers, that the drum wouldn't even spin. And when I had fished out several gobs of feathers with my highly sophisticated tool, (a bit of hanger wire with a hook on the end) I did manage to get it to spin, but boy did it ever make some weird complaining types of sounds.

That milestone was like, last Sunday? It's all a blur. I did start this ordeal a week ago. That I know.

Of course, T.C. was already looking at new machines, but there's really nothing wrong with this one, except that Muggins here didn't check the seams on the pillow that was getting washed.

Silly bunt.

Naturally, due to some sort of algorithm, now all I see are ads for washing machines come up on just about every web page I visit. Gotta be careful what you search for. Looking for blue pills? Ya, that won't be a secret for long.

Anyhoo, I think we've finally turned the corner on the feather situation. There was a time there, when it would in fact drain without any problem, but I'd still get a handful of feathers in the clean-out. I did briefly entertain the thought of hooking up a hose to spray around inside the drum in hopes of dislodging feathers.

I decided to pass on that, as I just didn't want one more thing to create a potential mess.

Down at the bottom of the machine there, just above that bucket, there's a little doo-hickey that you twist out, and it's a filter. It catches all the random coins, safety pins etc. that get past the drum.

And now, I'm seriously considering emptying the wet vac for the last time, and turning it back into a shop vac, and then replacing the drawer under the cabinet, and putting back the other mobile cabinet that normally resides next to the machine. Until the control board goes, or the computer, or one of the two pumps, or the belt, that machine will keep on working. But hey, at least I now know how to replace the belt. The other stuff? Meh. We'll let a few years roll by, and see how we feel about that.

Hope y'all are doing well.

Thanks for stopping by and moving your eyes back and forth.

Keep that stick on the ice.

This is the second time that something that could possibly be broken or damaged in transit from Amazon has arrived broken or damaged. It's a crap shoot apparently. Most things, and they're usually things unavailable locally that I order, are items that cannot possible have anything done to them.
You know, batteries. Random replacement cords. Elastic for masks due to a Pandemic.

Stuff like that.

Just punt it up the driveway. It'll be fine.

But then, as all the stores were closed, there was a "thing" that was deemed necessary for a birthday present, and the entire process was just a clusterfuck.

Firstly, it was "in stock", so we ordered it. And mysteriously, it was then "out of stock", and "we're not sure when we are expecting this item".

Huh?

So, I chatted with somebody or other, who then cancelled that order and sent another colour. Which ironically, turned out to be the colour we wanted in the first place. But, instead of arriving some three weeks ago, it wasn't due to get her until today.

Well, what you gonna do in a Pandemic? So that was that.

Then of course, it arrived chipped.

What the f**k!!

So back it went.

It's one thing to chip the enamel of your Dutch Oven after you've had it for maybe ten years, but not if it's never seen the inside of an oven even once.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of monkey it is that packs these things, but the way I packed it to send it back was a better job than their method of throwing one box inside another with a few feet of paper to keep it in place.

That method didn't seem to work.

It should be noted that Amazon keeps looking for more people to come and work at their distribution facilities. There's no mention however, as to whether those folks should actually have a brain in their head. And who knows, maybe it was damaged before it even got to Amazon? Do they bother to check on stuff that arrives at the distribution centre?

What ever.

There was no option on the "next...next....next" Amazon return page for any kind of a replacement, so after conferring with T.C., I slapped on the shipping labels and made a jaunt to the Post Office.

I mean, the good news is, We'll get our money back, and return shipping is free, but seriously. All they had to do was put in just a wee bit more paper inside the "outside" box to keep the "inside" box from moving around. Didn't do that.

Oh and, the other thing? "Made in China".

*grumble*

T.C. didn't really want it if it were made in China, but nowhere on the web page did it say anything about that. Not sure you can get much of anything that's not made in China these days, but we'd sure like to get away from that if at all possible.

Other than bitching about that this morning, I got nothin'.

The weather's perfect. The grass needs to be cut.

Sailing this summer looks like it's pretty much off the table. Regattas and racing have been getting cancelled left right and centre.

My understanding is that the boat is in the water, and I guess that if any ONE of us wants to go out with the Skipper, that would be fine. But sailing is more about the company and the conversation than just getting from point A to point B.

This too shall come to pass.

Hope everyone is OK.

Keep that stick on the ice, and thanks for stopping by.

Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-23455440584627843842020-05-09T17:14:00.000-07:002020-05-09T17:14:20.812-07:00Well, at least now we have a better understanding.Or, "how I learned to stay in the car".

I didn't take any snazzy pictures, so you'll have to be satisfied with a few words. I'll try to be punchy.

Anyhoodle, a decision was made to make an excursion to a particular butcher/deli kind of place about half way between here and downtown Toronto.

Now, I should say that, our impression is, that Toronto has been somewhat hard hit by the Coronavirus, but I don't have any actual numbers to back up that particular observation, so you'll have to take my word for it.
Suffice to say, in a similar fashion to most any large city, the occurrence of COVID-19 is considerably higher than most any place in suburbia.

Well, unless it's a meat processing plant, but that's a whole other clusterfuck.

I'm referring to the "Family Meat and Deli" on Brown's Line. You can look it up if you give a rat's ass.

But here's the thing.

There was some talk about "needing some meat", both on the part of T.C.'s older sister (she'll be 85 this summer, so we prefer to get her stuff, rather than have her go shopping) as well as a few things that they carry that we like. I'm referring of course to kranjska klobasa.

Our first clue should have been when T.C.'s sister called them a couple days ago, and the word was, "Oh sure, the two of you can come in, or you can order ahead of time."

Didn't register. But that should have been a red flag.

Now that we think on it, there are no deli type of stores that are just allowing folks to "come in".

The one we have here in Burlington was trying that a few weeks back, by only allowing two people in the store at a time, but when I was there, I could see that it clearly wasn't working.
The thing is, once you go into this type of place, you really need to stand in one spot, and not ramble around trying to decide what you want. If it wasn't for the fact that I would have had to touch the guy, I really wanted to clobber this one fellow who simply couldn't seem to figure out what he wanted without wandering up and down the display case.

In the meanwhile, that particular store (J & G Meats) has very astutely realised that having customers in the store simply doesn't work, and have gone to "curb side" shopping. We all know what that is, so no need to explain.

So, back to "Family Meat....". And this is all I know from the report that I got back from T.C.

They haven't a clue.

After she donned her mask and went in, I saw two more people go in, (without masks on, I might add) and it looked like there were already at least two or three in the store. And this is not a big store. About as wide as the average townhouse.

Not that wide.

So, T.C. is trying to keep her distance, getting somewhat hassled by other shoppers, who don't know where to stand, and then? They're calling out numbers!

She bailed.

Apparently, there was only one lady behind the counter, and just how she was supposed to be cleaning anything (including the number thingy) was unclear. (like, impossible) Plus, there was no protection for the cashier, like the sort of screen that mostly all of the retail outlets have installed. Just a disaster waiting to happen.

So now we know. We know why the numbers are so much higher in a city like Toronto compared to say, Burlington.

It's not just the stupid people. I think it also has to do with a sense that, even though there might be a ticket in the offing, the by law officers are so few and far between, that there's no worries about anyone putting up a fuss.

It was a nice day for a drive.

Which is to say, not a nice day to be outdoors. We had snow. It was maybe one or two degrees above zero when we got up. Not sure what to say about May. It pretty much sucks so far. Naturally, I've already switched out the winter tires.

On the other hand, the Marinas aren't opening, which means the boats won't be going in the water any time soon. But in light of the crappy weather, that seems to be an OK thing. Who knew?

Still unclear how the whole sailing thing is going to pan out this summer.

We'll see.

That's all I got.

Thanks for moving your eyes back and forth.

Keep washing those hands.

Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-91726360321398140252020-05-07T11:00:00.001-07:002020-05-07T11:00:24.804-07:00Big day today. It's garbage day! Whoohoo!

*snort*

And, yard waste, and recycling, and well, it's enough to get motivate me to get dressed this morning.

And, and.

Well, that's really the extent of it.

T.C. is making masks for members of the family. I think she's up to around 25 or 30 by now, most of which have been delivered. She did get a request for masks from one of our nieces and her gang, with the query as to "how much?" But, T.C. isn't doing this to make any money, she's just making masks. She has all kinds of material, although we're waiting (and waiting) for more elastic to come from God knows where. Had we known it was on a slow boat from China, I suspect we might have tried to source some elsewhere.

She can manage in the meanwhile.

I swear I see more delivery vehicles roaming around the neighbourhood than....anything.
And that's OK, as I certainly don't miss all the Moms racing around the corner to get their kids to school on time. I swear we could just take down the stop sign at the corner and nothing would change.

Of course there are the folks out walking their kids to try and either keep them occupied or at least burn off a little energy. I'm sure many, many folks with school aged kids have a new appreciation for the teachers in their kids lives. Just a thought.

Of course, there's the odd "Covidiot" out and about.

Now, how do I know? Well for example, if the neighbour's "kid" (he's probably in his twenties by now) is heading out somewhere with his dirtbike on the back of his pick-up truck? What kind of "essential service" would he be performing?

Entertaining the medical staff in the parking lot of the local hospital?

Right.

This was on the front of the local rag that arrived on our driveway yesterday. And no, this isn't the "propaganda" one. Just the local offering that used to have way more flyers, and now has been reduced to not much of anything. The big change came after the shut down.

I actually liked the flyers. But, now all the stores have that sort of thing "on line".

I didn't have to read the article to totally get the gist. Of course we want to shop locally. We (this household, and the kids) have been doing that for years. Trouble is, not everyone either can or is willing to go to the extra effort.

And they say that the Farmer's Market might not reopen for quite some time. Yikes. That will suck.

I'd be willing to drive around the countryside seeking out all the farms that would have come to the market, and doing some sort of "end of driveway" thing. I mean, fuel costs wouldn't be a big deal.

Anyhoo, I'm still farting around with the table that I'm stripping. Just not looking forward to sanding the bendy bits.

Had to take it apart to make it a bit easier to work on.

I do some as I feel like it. It's not like the little project I had last year when I was "on the clock". This is for my nephew and his wife. He's the kind of fellow whom you can call for help, and he'll be there. Being as he's a fireman, he was the guy to call to help with putting stain on the front of the house last summer, way up there at the peak, where Muggins here has very little desire to be.

Not only am I not crazy about heights, but being that far up not just a scaffold, but a step ladder ON TOP of the scaffold to boot.

No sir.

Meanwhile, T.C. tried her hand at making some treats for us.

Because we're wasting away to nothing.

Hope you are all well.

Thanks for stopping by.

And all the rest.

Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-31615927643837928472020-05-04T13:45:00.000-07:002020-05-04T13:45:08.637-07:00We don't have a bird cage. There was a budgie here in the house when we moved here, but it took no time to get rid of him. He was "relocated". And no, that's not the same as, "he went to the farm". But, whatever.
His owners came and took him away.

So no need to line the bird cage with newspaper. We do however, have a wood burning fireplace, so I always make sure that I set aside a certain amount of newsprint that comes to the door for just that reason. I've heard it said that, "print media is dead", and if that's not quite the case, then I suspect that it's been on life support for some time. Just the same, there is enough newsprint floating around that I can start a fire whenever my little heart desires.

And where the heck am I going with this?

Well, a few days ago I guess it was, there was a tiny segment on the Toronto news about folks being upset about getting this one particular publication in their mailboxes. "It's Propaganda!" was the mantra.

Of course somebody, the News People maybe? contacted the Post Office to enquire about just why this was being circulated, to which the Post Office more or less said, "Um, because they're paying us."

Which, in consideration of the somewhat poor financial situation of our Canadian Postal Service, is probably a good thing.

Well yes, it is in fact, "Propaganda", but if you think in general terms about just what propaganda really is, then most anything that you read that might have a particular slant could be considered propaganda.

Oh and, interesting little side snippet, the German translation for "word of mouth" is "Mund Propaganda". Literally, "mouth propaganda".

So, here's the publication, or at least part of the front page:

I had a couple thoughts when I noticed it in our mailbox:
First of all, "oooh...we got mail". (Because we don't seem to get mail every day these days) and then, "Oh look, they're delivering this crap all the way out here. Huh."

I'm pretty sure my next thought was, "Welp, now I have enough newspaper to have a fire tonight if I want." And that was about it.

No calls to the media, or Canada Post.

Oh and, they're trying to say that the Coronavirus was a huge Chinese plot of some sort. Really, I didn't read it, so I have no clue. And hey, maybe it was? We'll never really know. Nor will these folks who pretend to know enough to put it in a "newspaper".

Now, I will say this. What ever numbers are coming out of places like China or Saudi Arabia in terms of the stats on the Virus? Not credible. And really, until every single citizen in any country you can name has been tested, none of the numbers are really believable.
Having said that, even if the numbers are off by a couple percentage points, there's a helluva difference between having more dead than the Vietnam War and say, 3800 plus deaths in a country like for example, Canada.

Meanwhile, this past weekend, Daughter Number One had a birthday. And I realise that, at a certain point in time in ones life, birthdays are maybe not the huge deal as when one was say, a teenager? Speaking for myself, I'd just as soon let birthdays slip on by with very, very little fanfare.

I'm sure however that there would have been at least some cake involved and a song if it weren't for the Pandemic.

Instead, there was a stream of visitors at the front of their house, with some presents to unwrap. No singing though.

T.C. made her a "clutch purse":

Now, I'll say this about that.

Prior to the whole Pandemic thing, any time that a present was being prepared here at The Ponderosa, there was always the concern that it would be discovered at some point during the process. You know, folks come over for dinner, there might be some reason to go to the sewing room, or out to the garage. Like that.

At one point maybe a month ago, T.C. caught herself about to say, "Oh, I'd better put that stuff away." and then realised that, nobody's coming into the house. And nobody will be for quite some time.

We were having a little discussion about just how cautious is TOO cautious. Um, I'm kind of on the side of, there is no such thing as too cautious?

Even though I might have the right of way on a rural road where the vehicles coming up on my side have a stop sign, do I just keep barrelling on through, hoping that that transport truck is going to stop? Or maybe I just might slow down a bit and keep an eye on him. What if he doesn't see the stop sign? By the way, I'm thinking of this particular example.

Anyhoo, that's all of my ramblings for today, and maybe for a few days.

Thanks for stopping by.

I mentioned on Sunday that there was this "pick-up order" that had been ordered at one of the local grocery stores. And originally, the delivery date was two weeks off, and as a result, this order had been started some two weeks ago. And that's kind of OK, as you can add to it right up until the day before the scheduled delivery. Oh and, these folks had been doing this long before the pandemic, by the way.

T.C. wanted to do this, as Daughter Number One had put in an order that she picked up a week ago, and her Mom had added things to that order.

So like I said, it was our turn.

Eventually, late in the afternoon, T.C. got a note, and I got the "OK, we have to go pick up our order!" command from T.C., so off we went.

The deal is, when you arrive at the store, you call them, tell them in which parking spot you are located (they have a designated area) and they bring your order out and place it in your trunk.
As I was sitting there, I kind of wondered, "what the heck do you do if you don't have a phone?" but I guess everyone and their dog has a mobile phone so, dumb question.

Naturally it was raining. And, thinking that someone would be out somewhat expeditiously, I naively popped the trunk.
And waited.
Of course, a gust of wind came up and opened the trunk all the way up and, thankfully we don't keep much at all in the trunk, because whatever was in there was getting wet.

Now, first of all, let me tell you a little story. See, when I was all of 16, I worked in a Lumber Yard. It was OK in the summertime, but I also chose to work Saturdays throughout the winter.
Man on man, you don't know cold until you've had to pry a few snow covered two by fours out of the pile on a cold winters day. But my point is, in no time at all, not only did I know all the different products, but was operating the towmotor, cutting bridging on the bandsaw (it was huge!) and doing deliveries. And not just the "trim truck", for some reason that to this day remains a mystery, I was also sent out with the big truck to deliver framing.

Oh and, this was all "pre-gps"! There were some cryptic instructions, let me tell ya! And, once you were out for delivery, you were really on your own. No cell phones either.

And then, skip forward to my last year of High School, when I worked in a small grocery store within walking distance of school. Within a very short period of time, I certainly knew all the products. Now, maybe because I spend a few early years on a farm, I have a bit of an advantage when it came to produce? But I doubt it.

And where the hell am I going with this?

Question: How do you end up getting radishes in your order, when you wanted beets? Did someone say, "just gimme some of dem red things"?

It's like some sort of "Grocery roulette."

That situation might have been even somewhat more tolerable if either of us could stomach radishes. I've tried them. Don't like 'em.

Now, the bonus of the "grocery roulette" situation? Well, we did get an extra container of bread crumbs, as well as a third ball of pizza dough. No extra charge. So that kind of makes up for the time we had to waste having to go back to the store and wait for some kid to come out with a bunch of beets.

And yes, they got their radishes back.

The produce? Well, even *I* can pick out better produce. And I'm always given stern warnings about how to pick out produce. It would seem you're at the mercy of whatever blind employee is saddled with the task of picking out your cauliflower (with just a few too many brown spots) along with the sad, sad looking lettuce.
It's encouraging to know that they're willing to hire the handicapped. But having the gift of sight is what I would consider a priority when it comes to picking out groceries?
Just an observation.
And even that requires sight.

I just said, "Well, if it's painfully average produce that you want, I can get that at the "Food Basics" down the street."

T.C. muttered something.

We may just have to live without lettuce.

In other "news", I did bake another banana bread.

May as well. Certainly more satisfying than any kind of shopping.

And that, sadly, is the extent of the excitement in our lame little existence.
And, maybe I have some more in another closet. Not sure.
Just one of those minor annoyances where you go, "Oh crap, forgot about that". Because, you know, one does tend to "shop for the basics". At least I do. There were a few nitwits loitering about in Costco that last time T.C. and I went. So much so that, getting past this one particular dimwit on her phone was neigh on impossible if any kind of "social distancing" was to be observed.

There was one moment a few days ago when I was in the Food Basics down the street, and some guy was on his phone (texting with his wife for grocery ideas? ) and I couldn't get past him, so in a voice that was certainly loud enough, I said, "HAVE YOU MADE A DECISION?" And this was after I had (politely, I might add) given him a good minute to figure out just what the hell to do. He apologised and moved along. Of course, the apologising thing is supposedly the Canadian thing to do. In the States I might have got shot. Hey, the Yanks think we live in Igloos, we too have our ideas that may or may not be quite accurate.

Anyway, I'm not here to talk about cotton swabs.

Life is pretty normal here at the Ponderosa. T.C. and I made Perogies yesterday, which is something we do from time to time. And yes, when I say "we", I don't just mean "she". She did mix up the goop for the innards (a mashed potato and cheese mixture) rolled out the dough, while I put together the Perogies. Keeping ahead was the challenge, so there were times when she put down the rolling pin and made a few by hand.

We did have a couple tools at our disposal.

Sometimes it's all about the tools.

The thing on the right is this roller thingy for making perfect little circles of dough, a rolling-circle-cutter and the clam shell thing on the left is kinda self explanatory.

I swear I didn't prompt T.C. to take my picture. So fine, I'll throw it in here. We ended up making 95. This time around, we boiled them up first, then they went onto the trays after brushing on some melted butter, and then they went off to the freezer. They have to be frozen individually. Then I'll do the "seal a meal" thing.
There were maybe five or six "duds", and we put in a few extras to make eight, and had them for supper. Fry up an onion in butter, put in the Perogies, and serve with sour cream.

And maybe you're thinking, "Why 95, and why would you need to know?" And, we probably would have made it to 100, except that we ran out of mix. Had to turf out the left over dough (hate doing that, but you can't use it) And as to "why"? Well, it's maybe due to T.C. being a retired CPA? Mind you, it's good to know just how many you'll end up with, but a rough guesstimate would have worked for me.

I'm not anywhere close to the point where I might have to go to any other store other than a grocery store. I'm still farting around with stripping the table out in the "shop". Can't say it's fun. And I suspect I'll have to get a little aggressive at some point, as first of all, it's not an antique, and my niece has mentioned that she wants to change the colour anyway. So, there won't be any attempts to "keep the patina" or any of those things you try to do to preserve the value of an antique. And yes, I've seen a few antiques just get completely ruined as the result of "good intentions".
Now mind you, I think the term "antique" has taken on some sort of hidden meaning in that, somehow there's the understanding that it's somehow "special". A piece of furniture might be old, and considered an "antique", because that's the term we use, but it may very well have been a piece of junk when it was put together. We have a couple of those. And I keep them more for function over their supposed value. We have a "wash stand" that looks like it was put together by a blind badger. Seriously. It's horrid. But, it's stayed together all these years, and functions perfectly well as a night stand in one of the spare bedrooms.

******

Anyway, I've heard various reports when it comes to the new "curb pick-up" efforts that some places are trying to do. Hope Despot comes to mind, but here in Canada we also have Canadian Tire and Home Hardware.
So, Home Hardware is kind of like "Ace Hardware" I suppose, and Canadian Tire has evolved into well, just about everything. They've gotten huge. There's a couple links if you want to move your eyes back and forth. Canadian Tire
And, Home Hardware

Saves me a lot of typing...

Now, a few years back, for shits and giggles, I ordered something or other from Home Hardware and went to the store to pick it up. Somehow I was expecting a situation similar to Lee Valley, (don't you just love all these links I'm putting in?) where they have an area inside the store that's kind of off on its own, where you go to pick up your stuff.
Not Home Hardware.
I had to walk the the very back of the store to "Customer Service" where, they didn't really have a clue.

So, I was a little surprised to hear from one of the "Zoomers" a few days back that Home Hardware were really doing a good job when it came to the "Curb side pick-up" thing. Who knew?

Conversely, Canadian Tire? Um, no. Reports are, they haven't figured it out. And Home Despot? Again, reports are that you'll get your order in a timely fashion once you get notified that it's ready, but that whole "getting ready" part can take days.

Well, that makes sense.

For years now, places like Lowe's and Home Depot very much depended on the customer doing all the work. You bring in a cart from outside, load it up, take it to the cash, and then load your stuff into your vehicle by yourself. Unless you ask for assistance and then have to stand around waiting for some "help" to show up.
And recently, "for your convenience" they've added "self check-out".
I don't do "self check-out" . The last time I operated a cash register, I was getting paid to do so, and was the one training the staff on just how it all worked. So unless I'm on your payroll, or you're giving me some incentive, it's not happening.
The quandary then is, do they have the staff available to fill all those orders?
Of course not. And this is why a lot of places are crying for more employees. They've been trying to screw everyone out of a job for so long, that now they are the ones getting ever so slightly buggered.

And here's another "funny one".
Some time today, T.C. is expecting to get a note saying her grocery order from Fortinos is ready for pick-up. I haven't really checked their website to see how it works, to be honest, but T.C. tells me that she had to pick a "slot", and a couple weeks ago, there were no slots available for ....two weeks.
So fine, Daughter Number One had already put in an order and T.C. was able to add some things to it, and it was picked up last week. Today will be our turn. The curious thing? Now there are boatloads of "slots". Ha!
Do you think maybe folks just decided it was too much hassle to wait two weeks to get some groceries? Hm?
Plus, folks didn't really know what to expect. Because yes, you CAN go to the store. You may think it best to wear a mask. Keep your distance for the stupids. Or tell them to get the fuck away from you. But it is possible. And surprisingly, there is in fact, toilet paper available. Along with flour and most everything else. Hair care products? Don't know. Don't care.

Have you seen my head?

Although, I may have to try and convince T.C. to come to grips with my hair clippers one of these days. I think there's a pun in there somewhere.
This is pretty standard stuff.
I've never, ever even entertained the idea of going off to some city in... (insert State or Province) to vote for some Board of Directors. AND, I've managed to tick the boxes enough times to no longer get these silly notifications. Except for a couple.

Now, I probably should let them know that we don't really need to read an annual report, but it's still a pretty good read.
Curiously, they have a fair amount of money invested in Airlines. I wonder how that's working out for them.

I'm just going to now put in some random pictures, as I have very little else to say. Well, except that, after taking T.C. to just one more store yesterday, we probably needn't crawl out of our abode for another six weeks. Some sort of "ground hog" syndrome.

The other night, I cooked up some burgers, and was thinking of George Yates. Even before his untimely death a while back, it seemed that he always came to mind every time I fired up the Weber.

There's not too much else happening out there, and she's waiting patiently for the weather to warm up just ever so slightly so she can start messing about with her roses.

It's been a cold, windy and sometimes wet April so far.
And just you wait, one day it'll blast up into shorts weather, and we'll all be wondering just what the hell happened.

On my end of things, my nephew dropped off a table that I said I'd strip for them. I remember this table from when he and his new bride lived in our basement apartment back in the early 90s. It's definitely showing the signs of having raised three kids, along with a few cats and dogs.

It's been sitting out there since Saturday, and I only yesterday decided to slap some stripper on one of the leaves. Just have to do it. I'll plug away.

I like to pretend that I'm "busy", but that fits in with the theme of this missive.

They're not in any hurry for it (well, they'd better not be!) as they're moving to a new place in May which, admittedly is coming up pretty soon.

I guess that's all I got. We'll be having a little Zoom session this afternoon with our usual Pub bunch, so we'll see how that goes.

Thanks for stopping by and moving your eyes back and forth.
I got lazy and didn't finish what I started. BUT, it's snowing again this morning. )

I wanted (like, really) wanted to put the "F" word in there. But I think you get the drift. That, and of course the wind is blowing.
It's flippin' April 21st.

(No, see above....)

That's about all I have on my mind at the moment.

Well, and I did just order some "stuff" on line just now. "Free delivery", or you could order for pick up, and they'd bring it out to your vehicle. But then I'd have to, I don't know, drive there?

Mind you, gas is so cheap right now, that just driving around isn't such a huge deal, but why? We've been so programmed to try and make every trip count, and not run around aimlessly, that it somehow just doesn't feel right to "go for a drive". I know there are some who do, and I do appreciate the need to keep from going bonkers, so I'm OK with that.

Just not my thing.

Now, speaking of making a trip for nothing, I did the trip to Costco this morning.

First of all, Costco has set it up so that "Seniors and those with mobility issues" can come in on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from between eight and nine.

Well, even though the streets of Burlington seemed relatively calm and I dare say deserted, that was NOT the case this morning at Costco. And this was at about 7:45. Somehow I think that every flippin' senior in town was lined up to get in to Costco. I mean like, they were lined up around the building.

And as we well know, it's a BIG big building.

First of all, my left knee has been giving me some grief today (weather related? possibly) so without a cart to lean on, that was reason number one why this wasn't the place for me. The reason number two? Number Two.
Let me repeat that. Number Two.

Early in the morning? Old guy?

I do vividly recall shitting myself when I was about four, maybe? That sensation of having a nice warm turd just hanging there right below the crack of yer arse is something that one tends to remember for a long, long time.

Needless to say, it's a memory that'd I'd prefer to not revisit. Once was enough.

Now, I realise there may come a day, maybe twenty, thirty years from now? Let's not even think about it.

Anyhoodle, T.C. and I made a little trip to see each of the Daughter Units to drop off some Muffin Mix (it's a Mom thing) . Plus, Daughter Number One had been lamenting the fact that, normally she only makes coffee at home on the weekends, as she's one of those commuter types, and she's been going through her really pricey fancy coffee, so I took her some of the cheap stuff. I just drink the cheap stuff. No cat pooped coffee for me. (There's a bit of a poop theme going on here.)

These deliveries took place some time around three in the afternoon, so we thought, "Why not at least drive by the Costco and see how it looks?" It didn't look that bad!
So we went in. You can't just wander in. They're only allowing so many in the store, but we were maybe only number 10 in line.
Of course, there are still a few boneheads who still haven't cottoned on to the procedure. One old guy was either trying to cut in to get a cart or whatever, and was informed by the staff that he had to get in line and they'd give him a (freshly sanitised) cart. He then walked past me, said something or other, and touched my shoulder! What the actual fuck!?
That coat is hanging up out in the garage. Don't fucking touch me!
Even when there's no Goddamned Pandemic, don't touch me!

And that's not to say I wanted to knock him on his ass or anything. I think he was just trying to be friendly. Plus, knocking him on his ass would involve having to touch him. Gah!

Well, out weekly "Meeting" with my breakfast group is about to start. So that's it for me.

Hope y'all are well.

Thanks for stopping by and moving your eyes back and forth.
Sometimes it's more than one, but I figure if I can do one "job" a day, then well, that'll have to do.

You'll note that I put "job" in quotes. I haven't actually had to go to an actual job in.... *thinks* twelve years now.
(and if I were still working, I'd bet anything that I would have been laid off by now...yikes!)

Well, it'll be twelve coming up in May. I vaguely recollect that I left my job on May 8th of 2008. In hind sight, I sort of wish it had been May the forth, and I'll let any Star Wars fans cogitate on that one.

Sometimes I count making the bed as a "job".

A wee bit lame, I realise. It depends on whether I might have any thoughts of actually doing something that day....

I'm not one to jump in a vehicle and go out for a drive, just because I can. However, on Friday I think it was, T.C. asked me, "When was the last time you drove your truck?" And I couldn't actually come up with a day. I think it was at least a couple weeks ago, when I ventured off to Costco.
I'm mustering up my courage to once again go to Costco tomorrow morning, and I can't say I'm exactly looking forward to it.
Hopefully, 1) I won't have to stand out in the cold too long and, 2) They'll have everything on our what is now a somewhat lengthy list.

Like I said. Not looking forward to it.

So, as the truck had been in fact sitting in one spot for over a week, I figured I had better go for a little drive on Saturday. Just up to the plaza and back. Probably all of five kilometres. Maybe. I guess. Who knows?

Long enough to warm up everything, and check on the situation at Home Despot where they are bringing stuff out to your vehicle after you order it on line. They had the parking lot blocked off part way with stacks of skids, forcing folks to only be able to go in one way, and it looked as though you had to have something along with you letting them know you were there to pick something up. No loitering. No going in to "look around". Probably the way it should have been all along.

Now, here's a curious thing. A couple years ago, I very naively was looking for something or other on the Home Despot website, and when I got to the store, I couldn't seem to find the thing I had seen on the line.
When I asked what the heck was going on, I was told in no uncertain terms that, "What's on the website isn't necessarily in the store." Huh?? I'm pretty sure I was looking at whatever they were supposed to have AT THAT LOCATION, as I had to first "Choose your store". I suspect they had to step up their game in light of recent restrictions, or nobody would be gettin' nothin'. *

I'm not a huge fan of Home Despot. Just because well, they do tend to run roughshod over other small businesses. I can give a couple examples, but those ships have sailed long ago.

Anyhoodle, my "big job" for today, was cleaning out one of our chest freezers. I specifically bought a 7 cubic foot freezer, not long after we moved here back in the 90s, rather than have some gargantuan thing into which you could put an entire half a cow, so that it would be much easier to manage. That is to say, keep clean.

It's worked out pretty good so far. No left over wedding cake, or dried flowers, or anything else other than food that's hopefully going to be consumed before ye olde freezer burn takes over.

I didn't take any pictures, but basically it involves having some place to put the contents (a freshly cleaned out tote with a lid) along with a number of ice packs (that were very conveniently already in the freezer) and a heat gun. Or, you can use a hair dryer.
The thing is, the freezer is going to take way too long to thaw out after being unplugged, so the whole process needs to be sped up with a little persuasion.
There had been some Lasagna in there that had been a little too generous in the sauce department, so that was fun. That of course, was my own damned fault, as I'm the one who would have put the Lasagna in there in the first place, so I must have been somewhat less than careful, and the thing leaked out a bit. Gah!

But the exciting news was, there was just ONE MORE peach pie filling left over.
And here we thought T.C. had used the last one a couple weeks ago.

Bonus!

Speaking of "my own damned fault", now the stupid squirrels are waiting patiently outside the back door just about every time I go out, as we had a bag of walnuts that "didn't taste right", and had to go.
So over time, I fed the lot to the squirrels.

They still do get the odd heal off a loaf of bread, but in these tougher times, I've been known to actually eat the heels, rather than throw them to the squirrels.

Selfish of me to actually eat the food I paid for, I know.

He's waiting!

I'm sure he can go off and find a nut out in the yard some place. I'm forever seeing holes in the lawn where they've been digging.

Oh, and in the 'job' department, T.C. made some more noodles.

I realise I normally don't mention too much anything that T.C. might have done, but I gotta say, once you've had home made pasta, eating "store bought" just kind of loses it's appeal.

But the thing is, when I was making banana bread in Vienna, I didn't have a mixer. I know! How lame is that?
I mean, I looked at mixers in Europe, and man oh man, were they ever expensive. I found out too late that I could have ordered one on this Continent that was wired for 220 volts and 50 hz, and had it shipped with our stuff. Didn't realise we'd be missing something like that so much. Oh well.
Of course, then I would have had to figure out what the heck to do with the thing when we moved back home. I did manage to sell our washing machine, but any of the other 220 appliances, we gave to charity.

Here at the Ponderosa, we have a "stand mixer", which is simply a wonderful invention. Just....let the thing run.

I'm not sure why I hadn't been doing this more often. I suspect laziness might play a huge part?

I really, really didn't want to talk politics today, even though there are some really, really stupid things I could go on about. You know, Orange Head, Kelly Ann Conway, the Governor of Florida etc. Oh and, Bishop Gerald Glenn. You probably heard of him. And I mean, he probably has a mother, and maybe friends who will grieve his passing, but really?
Just don't be saying stupid shit. Because you just never know. Well, I'm sure he's in "a better place", or at least he thought he was going to one. That's all that matters.

There's been a couple pastors that have...wait for it...passed on. See what I did there?

That's about all I got today. We did do a little road trip this morning, first for a "porch pick-up" of some sewing supplies for T.C. and then to drop off a birthday present and some masks at one of T.C.'s sisters. Keeping a safe distance of course. My only slight concern? I'd have to make sure that my bladder wouldn't be nagging me at any point in the journey, as any of the go to stop off places would be off limits. All Tim Horton's and McDonald's only have their drive throughs open, so there's no going in for what I like to refer to as a "McShit". And of course, there was no using the facilities at the sewing place, nor at the sister's-in-law.

Coulda got ugly.

As a side note, any time we were in a foreign location when we lived in Europe, I would always look for the "Golden Arches", as I knew there were toilets available. You might have to cough up fifty Euro cents for the privilege, but at least they were clean.

And with that thought, I'll bid you a pleasant evening.

Keep that stick on the ice.

Thanks for stopping by. And wash your hands!Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-31396739498829400702020-04-13T16:36:00.002-07:002020-04-13T16:36:51.279-07:00As the banana ripens. So by that, you might guess that I just might make some banana bread. But that won't happen until tomorrow.
I did manage to "step up", so to speak, and put dinner on the table, but after T.C. and I polished off a bottle of wine, I dare say that baking at this point might be ill advised.

Meanwhile, and not wanting to somehow be left out of the whole "baking at home due to the virus" situation, Daughter Number One has dipped her toes into the bread making milieu, with her first offering of sour dough. The word is that she's bringing over some "starter" later this evening for her Mom.
I try to stay out of it.

We do however, have some "spare" flour sitting on the counter ready for her to pick up. I dare say that D.N.O. is one of those who rarely uses flour in her life, and therefor didn't really have copious amount in the house for her baking adventures.

Just a hunch.

Both daughters are pretty good cooks, but I do have to say that, something went terribly wrong with that generation, as they never really cottoned on to the notion of baking for ones own needs. I suspect it wasn't due to some lack of interest, but more like the lack of time needed to do that sort of thing. If you're not getting home from work until some time in the evening, you are NOT going to then have the motivation to whip up a loaf of ....whatever.

And really, this was true of T.C. and I, back when we were their age, so maybe I should just shut up about that.

Anyway, that was tonight's offering. Shepard's pie. Although, actual Shepard's pie is made with Lamb, so I suppose it's some sort of hybrid, or bastardisation. Whatever, it's one of the few things I can make with relative confidence, so there.

We wolfed it down.

What I had actually thought of earlier today, and that I was going to comment on was just how the US is now NUMBER ONE! Yay!

Um, not in education, or quality of life, or (God forbid) health care, but the US is now Number One in the world when it comes to the number of cases of this new Corona Virus.

As the French would say, "Bien Fait". It doesn't mean what you think it means*.

Awesome to be Number One at something. Maybe just not THAT thing.

Of course, as in the case of our own number, I think the actual number of cases is somewhat higher. First of all, not everyone can get tested, even here in "socialist" Canada. But moreover, even with Orange Head's huge relief bill, even those with health coverage are somewhat fearful of going to get tested, as they can get a "surprise bill" from the hospital. You know what I'm talking about, don't you.
Plus, there simply aren't enough tests. Don't get me started.

See, for Canadians, the idea that you have to have a "Health Plan" is as foreign to us as the need to have a hitching post for our horses. There are horses in this country, to that I'll admit. However, they're not needed for every day transportation, so there's no hitching post needed here at the Ponderosa.
Or a carriage house. And news flash, we don't live in Igloos. Just wanted to point that out.

Anyway, we're all "covered". No money need exchange hands whenever you go to the doc. Now, there are certain tests that, if you decide you just HAVE to have one, you just might have to pay. The only example I can think of is the PSA test. If the doc orders it, it's covered. However, I was willing to pay the fifty bucks a couple months back to have that particular test done. It's free once I'm sixty-five, but maybe I want to know now whether there's an issue with my prostate.

I suspect the biggest expense we have when/if going to the hospital, is paying for the damned parking! It's like, seventeen bucks a day! But the visit is free!
Just make sure you walk there. That's my only beef.

I'll let you chew on that.

Thanks for stopping by.

Keep your stick on the ice.

And wash your hands!

*even though "Bien Fait" looks like it would mean, "well done", it's a Frenchman's sarcastic way of saying "Well done, idiot". Like that. Usually with a condescending tone.

Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-85502946361840053812020-04-10T16:04:00.000-07:002020-04-12T06:39:38.688-07:00The Good Friday routine. You know when you're sitting in some random restaurant washroom (OK, "restroom" for you Yanks) and you notice how the partitions are held together with these really weird fasteners? Well, no matter the fastener, I've got that bit!
And it wasn't a job related thing either, although I could understand why you would think that, in light of that whole "Caretaker" thing.
No, I have this thing about, I don't know, being able to disassemble just about anything. Or maybe there are certain tool sellers who rope me in from time to time? Not sure what it is.

Re-assembly is another story. But thankfully, most of the stuff I take apart isn't "rocket science". Good thing too.

So, where the fork am I going with this?

Well, the "routine" on Good Friday is, T.C. makes "Bean soup", for her, and anyone one else who might be here, as she observes the whole "no meat Friday" thing. Only on good Friday. Although, admittedly, there have been times when we've picked up fish and chips on the way home from the pub on a random Friday night.

Ah yes, the pub on a Friday night. (sad face)

I will eat the bean soup, although admittedly it isn't my favourite. She likes to cut it with a wee dram of vinegar, and by leaving out that one ingredient, I can eat it, and enjoy it. Helps to be ravishingly hungry too.

The other thing she does on Good Friday, is cook the Easter Ham. I didn't think to take a pic of the Easter Ham, but let me tell ya, it's mighty yummy.
There's a certain irony there I realise, as she's cooking something that she cannot eat.

In my case however, I don't do that whole, " no meat of Good Friday" thing. I was willing to make a peanut butter sandwich, but when I mentioned that I was still hungry after the bowl of bean soup, T.C. suggested that I try the ham. I do think she came mighty close to trying some, but she resisted.

So here's the thing. Apparently, if you baste the ham with apple cider, the ham flavour somehow intensifies. I have no clue how this works. Maybe something to do with the acidity in the cider? All I know is, mighty good ham. I'll be having more come Sunday.

The only slight trouble is, if you happen to get a little carried away with the ham basting, and squirt cider onto the back of the oven? Ruh-roh! No bueno.

BUT! I sorted it out!

This is where the whole, "weird ass fastener" comes into play. The back panel is held on with Torx screws. Now, maybe that's not all that exotic, but it sure is if you don't have the proper sized bit.

It's so much easier to clean parts when you can do it in the sink. And surprisingly, it just wiped right off. I'm sure the oven was hot, but whatever.
OK, maybe that's not that exciting. But hey, I was pretty darned stoked.

In other "news", Daughter Number One, who now has a whole whack of extra time on her hands, made us an Easter Egg, and brought it over today.

Well truthfully, she knows her Mom has a collection of eggs that she brings out at Easter, so really it was for the collection. It had very little to do with me I'm afraid.

Now, I realise I should have separated it out, but the black one in there is the one D.N.O made.

We were slightly slack jawed. It's...kind of awesome.

When she brought over the Egg, she let us know what the latest was concerning her job. Seems she was hoping to be laid off (huh?) but that didn't happen, but instead, she's been cut back to four days a week. All benefits to continue, and she can still work from home. The whole working from home already gives her an additional three hours a day that she no longer has to waste having to take the train in to Toronto. Same goes for her hubby. They seem to be able to stay out of each others hair, and have arranged some sort of "home office" set-up for each of them that works.
Oh and, she let us know that she put on a pair of jeans for the first time in three weeks, and they STILL FIT! Whoohoo!

Not sure if they'll ever want to do the commute again, to be honest. I did it once upon a time, and can't even fathom ever doing it again. There are many things that I cannot fathom ever doing again.

Working for a living comes to mind.

Anyhoodle, hope this finds you well.

Thanks for moving your eyes back and forth.

Keep that stick on the ice.

And wash your hands!

Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-19225984782493703062020-04-09T18:22:00.000-07:002020-04-09T18:22:02.058-07:00I see dumb people. What was that movie where the little boy kept saying, "I see dead people"? "The sixth sense", as it turns out.

Anyway, today T.C. and I had to go out. Not to be taken lightly, but there was need for a few things for the weekend. One of the stores that we have around here is a place called "Denninger's". It's actually "Denninger's Foods of the World", but we only use the shortened version.

There are only five locations around these parts, and they have their own manufacturing facility where they make a lot of their own products, such as sausages etc.

Most times I think one pays a little more than maybe at a regular store, but the quality is always there.

I naively thought she was going on her own, but I was sadly mistaken. There was the possibility of calling in an order and having them bring it out to the car, but that would have meant that someone on the other end would have to pick up the damned phone.

Besides, T.C. said she wanted to pick out her own stuff anyway. So fine, I waited in the car, and in she went. And by the way, that whole "I waited in the car and in she went" protocol would be exactly the same whether there was a pandemic or not.

Just wanted to let you know.

I shop, or she shops. We typically do not shop together. Just...a thing.

Interesting arrangement. The store that is. They had squirrelled away most of the carts, so that there were only enough carts for as many people as they were going to allow in at any given time. What that number was, I have no clue, but I was quite surprised that T.C. didn't have to wait outside, the way it seems to go with most places right about now. There was a cart available, freshly wiped down, and off she went.

Then of course, I get to watch all the clever folks coming out. Some wore masks. Some wore masks and gloves. Masks I'm OK with. You want to wear a mask? Go for it. Just don't touch it. Don't touch your face. So there's this one old guy (OK fine, maybe he's my age, but I'm sure he was older) He comes out with his bags of stuff, he's wearing gloves and a mask. And I'm thinking, "Well there you go, good for you."
He gets in the car after putting his stuff in the back seat, and THEN takes off the gloves, and takes off his mask.

And you might be thinking, "Well, so?".

See, once upon a time, when we were trained on cleaning up blood and "blood products" (not sure what the hell that was supposed to be, but whatever) we were trained in a special way as to how to take off gloves so as not to get the contaminant on your person. There's a trick to it. And, if you're NOT wearing gloves, you need to wash your hands or use sanitiser BEFORE you touch anything. Or get into your car, touching your steering wheel, and so on. Alternatively, you take off the gloves before getting into the car etc.

Not only that, but then he proceeds to touch his face. Like, wipe his nose with the back of his hand. And I'm just sitting there shaking my head.
I managed to not yell it out, but I'm sure I said, "Dude, you just missed the whole point!"

There were more examples, but I'm starting to get really agitated here.

In other news, T.C. saw a "bug". Well, really it was some tiny little moth like creature that was flying around up in the office, but somehow it was in our food.

Some how.

I heard this...rustling and crinkling of plastic, and thought maybe I'd investigate.

Right. Everything had to come out of the pantry.

The good news is, we did get rid of some Couscous and Quinoa from, I don't know, years ago. Along with some other mystery packets of rice. Oh and, these tiny little packets of gelatin. Gelatin? Huh?

And? No bugs.

You have to understand that, one cannot simply dismiss this sort of thing. Best to go along. I made sure I was checking the cereal as instructed. It too was bug free.

I'm reasonably certain that the little moth like flying thing has more to do with springtime on the way, and not something we brought in from a store. Or that is lying in wait with his multitude of friends, ready to take over the house.

Hope y'all are staying safe.

Thanks for stopping by.

Don't touch your face, until you....

Wash your hands.

And of course, keep your stick on the ice.

So, I had slapped a pic over on The Book of Face and thought, "hm, why not write up a few words here abouts?"

And here we are.

Every so often , Travelling Companion gets these ideas, that she wants to drop off dinner for the "kids". I think the idea is, when she was working, coming up with dinner every night was a wee bit of a chore. (this would be 'sarcastic font', by the way) Of course, the major difference was, she had two kids, a husband who, at the time, rarely got home before eight at night, and was studying for her Honours Economics degree.
So ya, not the easiest.

Admittedly, back in the days when we were poor as church mice, the kids did go without from time to time, but never offered a hint of a complaint. To this day, Daughter Number One never did get her "Green Machine", and I'm sure has forgotten all about it. Of course, it still bugs her Mom that we couldn't afford a "green machine", so she could be out there with the neighbourhood kids.

But hey, that's the way it was. We came out unscathed. Although, I think the lowest point was when we actually got a "care" package from the Church. It's funny the things one remembers. It wasn't the "best of times". And let's just leave it at that.

Now, in light of the whole "social distancing" thing, we haven't seen much of the kids at all. And in this case, dropping off food basically means keeping our distance, and just exchanging pleasantries.

We've done this before however, this time around, Daughter Number One asked if we could spare a bottle of wine, and could she perhaps borrow my saxophone? I figured, what the hell. I rarely pick the thing up, so why not? I doubt that she has any of her own reeds, but I don't really care. I'm sure she'll tire of it in a few days. And yes, I have a saxophone. And no, I won't be putting anything on YouTube. I suck.
Once upon a time, I was reasonably proficient, if I do say so myself. But not having picked the thing up for well over forty years can do a bit of a number on ones abilities? Shall we say?

Please note the proper "social distancing".

Just wanted to point that out.

So, Daughter Number One and hubby have been working from home for a few weeks now, and it seems to be going OK. She works in interior design, and at the present time, all construction has ceased in the Province of Ontario, so she's going to find out at the end of the week whether or not she'll be getting laid off. Getting "laid off" here abouts means still getting some money, depending on the number of years of service one has. She's been at this same firm for over 10 years. Seems to me, that's one week of pay for every year of service. You can correct me if you think you know better.

Either way, they'll be fine. She's quite looking forward to getting laid off, but of course, with the Pandemic lurking about, it doesn't mean she be gadding about any time soon. So, kind of a bummer.

Anyhoodle, hope y'all are hanging in there.

I'm not at the point yet where I'm yearning for the building supply stores to reopen, although that day may come soon enough.

Thanks for stopping by.

Go out, that is.

I think there was a slight welling up of panic when I realised that the coffee container that I was about to empty was not the second last one, but the last one!

Gah!

Gotta step up my game when it comes to knowing what I have in store, as I thought I had a spare. I always have a spare.

So, I sucked it up and went to Costco. And I must say, they've figured it out.

First of all, I did have to go out early Monday morning, as we were getting down on the bread end of things, and the store down the street had an hour set aside for "old folks" from seven to eight. AND, unlike the store where T.C. had to go to last week, these guys had a security guard at the entrance way, sort of eyeing everyone on their way in so as to make sure they were in fact seniors.
Apparently, I qualify. No need for I.D.
Not sure if that should sadden me or not.
And it was not crowded in the least.
I made sure to profusely thank all the employees for being there that early.

Anyway, Costco also has an hour set aside before they open, from eight until nine on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for seniors but unfortunately, I didn't get that memo in time, so I went for normal hours.

Not a huge deal.

I naively grabbed a cart from one of the corrals to take in with me, but that wasn't needed, as they were sanitising all the carts just as you went in, so no need for the gloves or wipes on my part. AND, they had two distinct areas/lines set up, divided by piles of skids, so as to separate those going in, from those coming out. We did have to line up, with everyone far enough apart for proper distancing etiquette. Plus, there was a bit of a wait, as they were only allowing a certain number of shoppers in at once. I read somewhere that the number was 50, but don't quote me.

Then it was pretty much easy peasy from then on, as they had everything that was on my list. And no, I didn't need toilet paper, although I did see that they had boatloads.

Then, coming out, there were two distinct lines to get up to the check out area, with hash marks on the floor as a reminder of proper distancing etiquette once again. It was very orderly. Didn't have to put my groceries on the belt. Had a spot to stand as it was being rung up, the cashier scanned my Costco card from about six feet away (a bit of overkill I thought) and I only really had to come in contact with the payment terminal, which her assistant had just wiped down. I had sanitiser with me and gave my hands a going over after all that as well.

Oh and, they didn't do that whole checking off your crap against your receipt thing either. I never did understand that. Like they're able to tell if you've got all your goods? Really? Or that you somehow miraculously were able to slip an extra huge bag of flour onto your cart?

They had removed one of the terminals at each end of the line of terminals in order to make extra room. This was a welcome change from the way it had always been, where your cart goes one way, and you're forced into an area next to the other member behind you. I never did like that.

And, as I said to the cashier, I've never liked it when fellow shoppers get too close to me anyway, so I was completely good with the whole situation. Like, beyond happy. Thinking up catchy T-shirt captions, that sort of thing.*

I think I first started to notice folks being too close to me when we lived in Puerto Rico, as fellow shoppers were forever getting well into my comfort zone. Thankfully, I'm taller than most Puerto Ricans, so I never got any of the head colds that always seemed to be going around. That's also probably where I really started to become a bit of a Germaphobe.

Or maybe even before that? Not sure.

Oh, speaking of which, and this was the only time I actually spoke with another shopper, while standing in line, I couldn't help but notice what I think was a lady who, for what can only be due to paranoia, was basically covered from head to toe in plastic. She had plastic bags on her feet, some sort of plastic bag on her torso. Plastic bags on each leg. A mask, and the obligatory plastic bag on her head.

I so wish I had taken my camera.

Oh and, she was lining her cart with newspaper! Newspaper!

Because apparently them spraying down all the carts just before they give you one wasn't enough, and somehow you can get a virus through your feet?
The floors were so clean you could eat off them. And I dare say, as a result of some of the over the top efforts of just about any place you can think of, floors in public places these days are probably cleaner than most people's houses!

So, the guy in front of me saw this at about the same time as me, turned to me, said not a word. But I had to say, "OK, there's being prepared, and then there's being paranoid."

But hey, whatever floats yer boat. I mean, you can cut up an onion, put it in your bedroom, and as long as you never leave your bedroom, you'll never get sick.
True.
It probably works just as well with watermelon, but they'd need to be in season.

No plans to go anywhere for a few days again, as I'll head to the wine making place to pick up our new supply on Tuesday. I was going to go today, but let me just say, it's surprising just how often one relies on one's back muscles for the simplest things?

No big deal. I've done this before. Just happened to bend down the wrong way, and ouch!
I'll be better by Tuesday I'm sure. Just...putting on socks this morning was....a chore.

Annoyingly, I have a few things in the house that need shifting around, which normally T.C. and I could manage together, so that's out the window. Plus of course, I can't even call on one of the Daughter Units or Sons-in-law to come help, as we don't want to have anyone come to the house.

Thanks for stopping by.

So far, the hair salon and nail salon are missing a few bucks due to the Covid-19. I shan't attempt to quantify just how much I mean by "a few bucks". But let's just say, with the money we've saved, I'm thinking of buying yet another woodworking tool and having it shipped to the door.

Just a thought. Thoughts are free.

Mostly.

Haven't quite figured out what I want to do today. Might just futz around out in the "shop". Seems the sensible thing to do. I have enough material to make a couple more book cases for the downstairs, so that might be an idea.

I haven't run out of material just yet, although there are a couple other things in my pea brain that I wouldn't mind taking a stab at. It mostly involves storage ideas.

Now, speaking of things involving wood, I did manage to (finally) finish a towel rack that T.C. had asked me to make some time *ahem* last year. (These things can take time, after all)

Hard to get just the right angle. I do appreciate that there are those woodworkers who have some sort of photo set-up, but I have no intentions of selling stuff, so I've never bothered. That chest in the last two pics is a cherry blanket chest I made...some twenty years ago? And the first pic has a bed that I made for Daughter Number Two some....twenty years ago. I dunno. Maybe that's a rough estimate. Twenty, twenty-five? I suppose I should sign and date everything, for posterity or something.

I do have one of those branding iron thingies, with Handcrafted by....The Caretaker. (no, that last part isn't quite true, but you get the idea)

I did get a call from the fellow who has the "make your own wine" shop, as I was due to go and bottle both a batch of red and a batch of white tomorrow (Wednesday) but he's technically "closed" due to Covid-19.
Now, considering that wine making involves being ultra sanitary, I'm not sure just how he needs to be closed, whereas the Beer Store and the L.C.B.O. are considered "Essential Services" here in Ontario.
I mean, I'm not complaining, and I do buy beer at the L.C.B.O. instead of the Beer Store, as then I do get a couple Air Miles to boot.
But "essential"? Not so sure.

Oh and, for those who are reading from afar, as good as our Health Care system might appear to be, our "drinking system" is from the Victorian era. L.C.B.O. stands for "Liquor Control Board of Ontario", and every province has their own little quirky system of regulating booze (and beer).

We can these days buy beer in the grocery stores, but of course, I never think to buy beer at the grocery store, some sort of conditioning I suspect, plus you don't get the variety that's available at either The Beer Store or the LCBO.

Anyhoodle, T.C. is making Potica, which is a type of Easter Bread, although it looks like we may be having Easter by way of Zoom, or some such internet thing. Not sure how that will play out.

I was going to put in a link, but you can Google Potica, and see what I'm talking about.
And that was because he has been retired since....I think it was back in the 80s some time. I'd have to do the math.
So ya, in our case as well, "every day is Saturday". The major exception in the case of the weekends used to be that we would never set foot in a store, as we had no desire to be out and about with the working folk. Back in the days when I was working, and had to venture into a store after work hours or on the weekend, I'd get ever so slightly annoyed at the Seniors in there, mostly in the damn way. Just all I could do to keep from trampling someone's Granny.

But, we don't want to get off on any kind of a rant here.

We're getting a little bit of rain today, and the temperature is hovering around 4 degrees. (Celsius, what else?)

I was going to have a wee bit of a pity party yesterday, as both my back and my front were aching like a son of a gun, after having transplanted that Rose of Sharon on Thursday.

The weather prognosticators were calling for rain, but in typical fashion, they were wrong. It rained somewhere, but not here.

So it was just about perfect weather for working outside, with the temps up in the low teens. Something like that. Almost "shirt sleeve weather" for the average Canadian. Although, I find that we are typically more willing to step outside and brace the cold after the winter, than in the fall, when we've just come through a hot summer.

I'm not entirely sure that the Rose of Sharon will live, but I wanted to give it a shot. There was a certain amount of grunting. Or "peckin' and snortin' , as one of my other older brother was wont to say.
On the other hand, the ground was considerably softer than it would have been in the fall. We have clay here, and it gets to be just like rock. Digging by hand is, shall we say, problematic?

I had to remove one of the fence panels to get in close enough to dig the thing out (I didn't take a before picture, silly Bunt) so while I had the panel removed, I decided to dig out a strip of sod/dirt and put in a row of bricks under the fence. I still have a fair number of bricks hanging around. There was an assortment of random building materials here and there on the property when we moved in.
At the base of each pillar out front for example, there's roughly the equivalent of a half skid of random cinder blocks that were in the basement.

Three different sizes, just to make things interesting.

Don't forget, my late father-in-law was a contractor, so I guess there were some things left over from time to time. The story goes that he originally wanted to build out in the country, but T.C.'s Mom, (my late Mother-in-Law, whom I never met) being that much wiser, wanted to be in town where there was the possibility of public transit. A wise choice, as car maintenance wasn't necessarily one of his strengths. Won't elaborate.

Plus, back in the day, there was a "Lakeshore Bus" operated by Greyhound that my wife's siblings and she would take to get in to Hamilton to go to the only Catholic school around for miles.

The Lakeshore from here is maybe a block away? Well, a fairly large block. Like, a "Texas block".

And of course, Greyhound stopped the Lakeshore bus years ago. Progress.

We finally had brunch around noon time, and now each of us will go off to our respective "hobby rooms" for the afternoon. T.C. has her sewing room, and I my shop. Did I mention that we have an intercom? We don't bug each other with it, but once in a while it comes in handy.

Thanks for stopping by.

Keep your stick on the ice.

And stay inside.

Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-53941803987966013682020-03-25T11:57:00.000-07:002020-03-25T11:57:05.491-07:00It sure is quiet out there. My life as a recluse continues. I'm sure the money that we've saved by T.C. not going to get her hair or nails done has helped offset the money we've lost on the market.

But only slightly.

Thankfully, it's all just numbers on a screen, as we have these wonderful things that the kids these days don't have called "Pensions".
Ya, you can mock me all you want, you Millenials, or Gen Xers or whatever you're called, but just make sure you start saving your cash.
It is indeed unfortunate if your entire pension income is dependant on returns from the market, but I've never thought that that was such a good plan to start with.
That's all I'm gonna say on that.

At some point in the morning, when I'm starting to melt into the couch, I muster up my strength to step away from the computer and actually go and DO something.

The sorry thing is, by the time mid afternoon rolls around, my energy level is starting to wane ever so slightly, and I start to have thoughts of "maƱana" . There's always tomorrow.

I do have this one particular Rose of Sharon that needs to be moved. I'm not looking forward to that.

There was some discussion in the fall about moving it, and I really should have stuck to my guns on that one, as the recommendation from several websites recommend doing so in the fall. T.C. had other ideas, so here we are.

I'll probably kill it. Which would suck, as I quite like the thing. The trouble is, it's right where I'm going to eventually put a fence post, and if that happens, I'd kill it for sure.

Supposed to rain tomorrow, but maybe Friday? We don't go to the Pub on Fridays anymore, so it's not like there's some sort of time line during the day that I'd need to adhere to.

Admittedly, the ground is going to be a heck of a sight softer than it would have been in the fall, but that's hardly a consolation. I was younger in the fall.

Well, I see T.C. just emerged to cut herself a piece of Strudel, so I think that might be the plan for the afternoon. Then maybe a little snooze, and then "we'll see".

Thanks for stopping by.

Heh.

Well, I think I might have mentioned at some point over the years that I, in fact, could quite likely get along just fine living as a "recluse". Not a hermit, mind you. I likes my wifi and all that. And getting deliveries to the door would be problematic if living as a hermit. Plus, if I were to chose to live in some remote gawd fersaken place, I'm afraid I'd be very much alone.

Anyhoodle. There's always something to while away the hours. At least until my knees start to complain. And Oh Lordy.

But this isn't a Pity Party, so let's not go there.

After the bulk of the painting is done downstairs, and before I starting making some moves in the furniture department, I figured I'd suck it up and finally put down some baseboard of some sort.

This stuff is actually considered "casing", but the baseboard that I was looking at was kinda flimsy, and I wasn't about to blow too much dough on some fancy schmancy stuff made from Oak say, as it is the basement after all. I had thought that I'd be painting it one of the colours that would perhaps be a nice contrast to the paint on the walls, but T.C. took a look at the primed bit that I put down as a bit of a reference/test, and declared that she thought she'd like it to be white.

So white it is:

Always best to paint it ahead of time I find, so as not to be forced to spend all that effort on hands and knees trying not to get paint everywhere.

The beauty of the white is (or any colour for that matter) I can caulk any little "issues" I might find, and then just paint over it.

Me likey.

None of that has actually been nailed in place, by the way. We're still at the "fitting" stage here.

I'll get back to this once my knees stop complaining.

And to think, there was a time when I could spend a day doing just this, and then go in to work and carry on until midnight.

It's been a while.

So if I think of it, it's been a few years now that I've been "self isolating".

Hope y'all are hanging in there.

Thanks for stopping by.

Reports are the stores are whacko, but these are second hand reports as, being a Pensioner, I don't go to the store on a Thursday night, or any other time when the Worker Bees are in need of a good shop.

Saw one of my long time Facebook friends commenting on the line-ups at one place (on Facebook, of course), and moments later, got a call from Daughter Number One saying she and hubby went in that store, took a look at the lines, turned around and left.

I did go to Costco on Wednesday for the usual. Milk, bread, cream and....toilet paper. But, Costco is where I do buy toilet paper, unless it's on sale at Food Basics, just down the street from us. There was a bit of nuttiness in the toilet paper aisle, but nothing like I've seen on the news.

I was actually a little embarrassed to be buying toilet paper, as I really didn't want to be part of "that crowd". I can't figure out if the ones that were buying two and three bales, are actually running variety stores and selling it at a profit? If you think you're going to have the shits that bad to need that much toilet paper, there's going to be other issues. Besides, when it comes out like that, it's kind of a "self cleaning" situation.

But let's not go down that rabbit hole. Is that a pun?

Not sure.

Anyhoo, I think Daughter Number one was trying to get some guidance as to whether or not they should stick to their plans to go to Cabo San Lucas in a couple weeks. She didn't really come out and ask the Old Man (that wouldn't be cool) but it was one topic of discussion. The flight down is direct, but the return leg has a stop over in the US. That could be problematic. The flight cancellation wouldn't be too much of a concern, as many of the airlines are waving their fees in that regard, but they've paid for the villa already. Ain't gonna get that mulla back.

Now to some other (more sane) news:

Work continues in the painting department. I ain't no ball of fire, I'll tell you that much. I suspect I put in a good solid three or four hours some days, and then I get a little tired or hungry, and my motivation begins to suffer. Admittedly, there have been a couple times when I've done a wee bit in the evening, just to finish off a section.

And we made a discovery.

See, Travelling Companion had this idea that "we" want to replace the fridge that I've now moved to paint behind. So fine, we did some looking on the usual sites, settling on a model from Costco. Wasn't about to pull the trigger any time soon however. The idea was, that the fridge is "really noisy", and if we're going to be putting the day bed down there for an extra sleeping area, then it "has to go".

Plus, it seemed to be running way too much.

Except, when I moved it about five feet, sort of around the corner from the kitchen area, I immediately noticed that, not only was it heaps quieter, but that it also wasn't coming on nearly as often.

Huh?

I even thought that perhaps it had stopped working, and decided to check on it. Nope, running just fine.

Well see, where it had been sitting, it's not entirely level. I didn't think being slightly off kilter would make such a huge difference. Apparently it does.

This is a fridge that we bought second hand almost 20 years ago, and it's been chugging away down there all this time. So, having a new fridge would definitely help in terms of energy conservation. I'm just not too sure how long it would take to save that five or six hundred dollars in electricity costs.

I suspect, another 20 years..

Anyway, hope y'all are doing well. Self isolating and all. Turns out, I've been self isolating for years and years.

Who knew?

Thanks for stopping by.

I like thoughts. Thoughts are great. They require minimal effort.

Then along comes T.C. who, during our trip back from Ottawa (well, Osgoode really) last weekend, (no, a week ago last weekend...) managed to "rearrange the whole house". Here I thought she was having a little shut eye but NO, she was THINKING.

There's a big difference, between the way I "think" about things, and the way T.C. "thinks" about things. When T.C. engages in this activity, it usually means work.

For me.

So, along with moving random dressers, beds and desks, there was going to be some painting.

Ooof.

Oh ya, forgot to mention.

Took a little road trip last week. (no Bob, two weeks ago.)

Sister-in-law and hubby who live in Kingston, had (wait for it) taken the train to Toronto a few weeks back, stayed overnight at another sister-in-law's place, and then flown off to San Diego for a visit/vacation. Her hubby has two brothers in California. Of course, they naturally counted on taking the train once again back to Kingston from Toronto.

See where this is going?

They arrived back in Toronto on the Tuesday (a week ago) and having come to terms with the train issue, thought they'd take the BUS to Kingston.

You may or may not be aware that there have been some rail disruptions in this country due to some land disputes with some of our First Nations. I'm not going to get into it, 'cause I'll just say something I shouldn't. Even though it may very well be the very thing that every one is thinking.

A while back already, we had been thinking of taking a wee trip out that way for a visit, as both the Kingston Party and the Osgoode Parties had come for their usual Christmas visit, and I was looking forward to showing up at their respective doors and getting fed and lubricated.

Didn't plan on driving though.

It's been a long, long time since I ever took a bus most anywhere in this country, and taking a bus to either Kingston or Ottawa has me hearkening back to some time in the 70s. I was a student then, and bus fare was something I could afford, and besides, I didn't have a car at the time.

Skip ahead some 40 years. Um, I don't take no bus. And I don't expect anyone else close to my age or older to it either.

Besides, ever heard of The Corona virus? To me, a bus would just be a smaller version of a Petri dish, such as those really big Petri dishes, that on the outside look suspiciously like a cruise ships.

So, we drove off to Toronto a week ago last Thursday morning to fetch the Travellers, and continues on to Kingston. We didn't stay in Kingston, even though we were invited, as I know perfectly well that, when I've been away for any length of time, the very last thing I would want, would be to play host to a couple folks who, even though they may have provided some very timely transportation, are still going need a bed made up and food put on the table.

Besides, it was only another couple hours to get to Osgoode, so as to mooch off the other set of Christmas guests. Also, it was my sister's birthday (indeterminate age, but she's older than me) She lives in Nepean (part of greater Ottawa) and we wanted to see her on her birthday.

All well and good.

Skip then ahead to getting home and getting to work.

It's OK. Really. I don't mind too much. Except that, in "Bob Land", we don't just prime and paint over the crappy jobs that have gone on before.

First of all, back in 1992, when we built this apartment, there was a bit of a push on to get it done in a timely fashion. Took long enough to clean out all the junk, come up with some sort of layout, cut up the concrete floor for the plumbing, and then get on with putting up walls, etc.

As a result, there were several "hands" at work. With varying degrees of skill, let's say? So there was that.

Then skip ahead to around 2001, and Daughter Number Two and one of her college buddies thought they'd paint. Well. I'll not say much, except that I'm now taking the time to first of all fix some of the dry walling boo-boos from way back, and then sorting out some of the other "issues". Like, I just spent maybe a half hour scraping paint off of a phone jack that should have been removed, and not half painted over.

That sort of thing.

And yes, once upon a time, we had these things called "phone jacks". Old school I realise. But I either keep it in its place, or patch the ensuing hole once I take it out. Either way, pain in the ...

You might notice up at the top of that one window there, where you can see the corner bead? Wasn't done properly. Had to scrap off the very thin layer of drywall compound and fix it by taping it, and then applying more mud.

So I did get one wall completely done, and some stuff put back in that corner. I initially, naively thought I'd completely remove the cantilevered cabinet where that TV is sitting, but thought better of it.

Too many wires.

And, that's life here at The Ponderosa.

Just when you think you're "retired".

Ha!

Now that I take a closer look, I see that there have been some comments hanging around in my "waiting for....something or other" folder, and at least a couple of them were legit. So, if any of you legit commenters out there didn't see your comment show up. I do apologise.

Turns out, most of them where just gibberish. Wondering if I need a car loan, or some other such nonsense. Anyway, I sort of forgot that there was such as thing as comment moderation. Curiously, none of them were offering "male enhancement". Should I feel slighted, or slightly smug?

Whatever.

Meanwhile, I'm sure you're wondering in what upside down world we're living, since I'm on here TWO DAYS IN A ROW.
O. M. G....

Well, there's nothing on TV, and I thought I'd take a stab at putting the little micro SD card in the side of this here brand new Chromebook that T.C. so very kindly got me for Christmas. I did use a laptop once upon a time when we lived in Europe, and lugged it around with me when we made little trips here and there. But most of my photos are on the PC up in the office, (which I should be backing up, I might add) and I haven't really decided if I want to have pictures on this device as well. Oh and, the laptop (an Acer, I think) lasted about five years, and then started making funny noises, and then ultimately wouldn't fire up. It was a modified version of "Blue Screen of Death", and anyone whom I spoke to, basically said it wasn't worth the trouble to fix. So off it went, to Computer heaven.

Oh, and I have to say, once I more or less figured it out, the Chromebook is indeed pretty awesome. Not nearly as hot as a laptop (better batteries I suspect) and runs heaps longer on a charge. Just have to get used to the keyboard, and the "touchpad". Still not keen on the touchpad. I might have to suck it up and buy a cordless mouse. We'll see.

So, let me explain that picture.

See, T.C. wanted me to make her a towel rack. While I realise that I renovated the upstairs bathroom and there's plenty of room to dry ones towels, she's not keen on the way that looks. Don't ask.

Do you think I could find something on "Wayfair" or Amazon or some such place. Or even Walmart for that matter? Nope.

So I've been working on putting one together. Of course, I can't find any hint of plans out there (on the net, I mean), so I had to conjure up something out of my pea brain.
It's painful.

And I realise, what you see in the picture just looks like a bunch of sticks, but there's some significance there.

I had completed all the various pieces, got it all sorted "mechanically" speaking, and then set about to start the finishing process. And by that I mean, I broke out the sander.

Horrible, horrible job. Dust mask, ear plugs. Messy. Noisy.

You get the idea.

And then it occurred to me, I do have these fancy schmancy hand planes that I try to keep razor sharp, and shouldn't I be planing the wood to get it smooth???

When I came in for a tea break and mentioned this to T.C., along with admitting that "I'm an idiot", it should be noted that she did agree with me without a moment's hesitation.

But I let that go.

I still have to sand the curvy bits, but the hand planing program was heaps nicer. I promise to take a photo of the finished product in due time.

Thanks for stopping by.

Keep that stick on the ice.

And feel free to comment. I'll make sure to check.Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03523653271715366168noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589339935152891167.post-10483842861056824842020-02-16T07:58:00.002-08:002020-02-16T07:58:53.848-08:00Up and down like a toilet seat. The temperature, that is. We're finally getting a bit of our "come-upance" on the Winter end of things. A few days ago it was plus five, and this morning it's something like minus 13. (wrote this a couple days ago, sorry) I'm not translating to Fahrenheit. And don't get me started when it comes to the goofiness of Fahrenheit. Why 32? Why not, forty-seven?

On the winter end of things, so far I haven't really minded. It's been suspiciously mild. So much so that I felt compelled to go out and rake up some random leaves that were just way too messy for me to tolerate. Trying not to slip over the edge here.

This will serve as my once quarterly blog entry. And thanks to any and all who hang around to read this drivel.

Which brings me to a bit of a sad topic, and that is the passing of someone who always was willing to put a comment on the blog, and who will now be missed for that and other reasons. Of course, I'm referring to George Yates, the author of Our Awesome Travels.
I never actually met George or Suzie, but I did happen to see George a couple years back in Grand Bend, as I was sitting in my truck waiting for a buddy to come out of Tim Horton's with our coffees. George was just coming out of Grandpa Jimmy's, and the first thing I noticed was the big ole hat that he had on his head.
This blogging thing can be a bit of a strange critter, as there have been others (Rod Ivers of Retired Rod) who have passed away, and been sorely missed. Margie and Bruce Mallin also come to mind.
When you read about it, it sort of "hits you", in a way that's hard to explain.

But, let's not too maudlin here.

OK, what else was I going to say?

I've been messing about in my "shop", of course. Finally replaced a "temporary" out-feed attachment to my table-saw that I built in (wait for it) 1992. It was supposed to be temporary. Plus, I had to mend it at least a couple times over the <strike>years</strike> decades.

Here it is:

Simply a frame with some thin MDF attached. It was held on with a barrel bolt and a bungee cord. I could take it off, fold up the legs and set it aside.

But I wanted something that was on the table saw on a more permanent basis. Starting with this:

And then another frame attached to that:

Then you end up with this:

Which then becomes this:

I was too lazy to make new legs, as the ones off the old extension were perfectly serviceable.

And this, is how I spend my days. And of course, as I'm not overly creative/clever/whatever, this kind of thing not only takes me forever, but wasn't even my idea. Stole it off the net. Now, in my defence, the original was built back when cell phones were the size of a brick and the "internet" was some sort of "inter-netting" in swim trunks. You know, to help keep *things* in place.

In other news, it's also taken me something like 30 years to finally break my wooden mallet.
Dang it.

Supposed to kinda look like this:

I've whaled on the end of a lot of a lot of chisels with this thing over the years, and now I suspect I'll have to make a new one. Again. Dang it. I'll stick it together with some construction adhesive, and see how that works.

I originally made it when I was making our blanket chest. All hand cut dovetails, in cherry wood no less. Coincidentally, it was once again cherry wood that I was whaling on this time when it came asunder.

Oh and, if you think you can just "use a hammer"? Well yes, you can. Good luck. It helps to be able to look at where you're actually placing the tip of the chisel, as opposed to striking the end of the chisel with the hammer. And not your hand. A mallet is more forgiving, that is, easier to aim.

And there you have it.

Thanks for moving your eyes back and forth.

Keep your stick on the ice.
You may have to move your eyes back and forth a bit.

For years now, I've been driving around (in several different countries as well, but you know that) relatively unscathed when it comes coming into contact with other vehicles. There have been a few close calls, like a couple weeks ago when someone (never did see the driver) decided to come out of a parking garage without looking, and was within about a foot of my driver's door before the light went on, realising that there was someone there. I was laying on the horn the whole time. It was a "retirement residence", so your guess is as good as mine.

Now, that was in downtown Burlington. I think maybe I need to stay out of the downtown or something, but we need to go there once a week to get to the Pub. I mean, there are some things I ain't gonna give up.

Anyhoo, last Thursday (Oh and, Happy belated Thanksgiving to our American friends) I was once again in the downtown, tooling along, minding my own business, when a garbage truck driver decided to fling open his door to go back and help his buddy do their thing. Unfortunately, his timing was spot on. Well that is, if he HAD been aiming to drive his door into the side of my truck. Isn't there a thing about, "Be sure and check for traffic before opening your door.? Well, he didn't.

It's actually kinda hard to make out in those pics, I suspect due to it being a white truck.

Anyhoo, there's a big ole crease on the passenger door, the mirror is obliterated, and the window is kinda scratched to shit. Oh, and there's the beginnings of a crease on the second door too. That sticker there is from the cop shop, letting everyone know that yes, pictures have been taken.

Funny thing is, when I called the insurance company, at some point the young lady on the phone asked, "Do you have the mirror?".

*Snort*! Um, there was nothing left of the mirror!
After waiting for "The Supervisor" and sorting out all the information, we picked up the bits and threw it all in the back of the garbage truck. The door of the garbage truck? Well, it was bent up pretty good as well, and couldn't be opened. (So at least the driver won't be opening his door into traffic for the rest of his shift?)
Interestingly, although most of the handle is missing on the Tundra, the door was still operable.

One thought that I had was, "What if I had been riding a bicycle?" I mean, I nearly got "doored" once in Vienna, but that door wasn't at chest height, such as was the case with the garbage truck. I suspect I would have been in the hospital, or worse.

It's in the shop. The estimate was thirty-six hundred.

I know! I thought maybe a couple grand, but I suppose it adds up. The parts have been ordered and should arrive today. And here's something interesting, the insurance company only gives the body shop seven days to put it right after the parts arrive. Maybe that's because I have a rental that they're paying for??

Speaking of which, it's a mini-van. And, I realise we rented one a couple years ago in Maui, and that was fine and all, but I really wanted a pick-up truck. And I mean, this mini-van has a lot of little bells and whistles, (heated steering wheel, heated seats, remote start, remote operable sliding doors and rear hatch) but just the same, it's a POS.

There's something sort of rattling around in the rear suspension, which I find somewhat disconcerting. Plus, every time I start it up, it tells me it's due for an oil change. Really??

Even Travelling Companion had a somewhat less than complimentary comment in the brief time that she rode in it with me yesterday. And I hadn't said anything to influence her opinion in any way.

It's built by the people who claim to have "perfected the mini-van" after having introduced it back in 1984. Anyway, I just thought, "If this is their idea of having perfected it, I'm not sure what they've been smoking."

Of course, they're also 58% owned by Fiat, so now you know what I'm talking about.

I'll be bugging the manager over at the rental company to see if I can trade it for a truck when one shows up. Apparently they only have so many of them, and they were all out.

Well, that's my little missive for today. And maybe for a while.

Hope all is well with you lot.

Thanks for stopping by.

Keep your stick on the ice.
