Was that, “three years” or “three months”?

DSC_02001

Judging by the way the water was beginning to taste out of the fridge,  I *think* the filter is supposed to be changed every three months.  Hey, I wasn’t here.  There was a spare filter in the cupboard.  Changing it wasn’t something that occurred to me when we were home for our visits.  I think I was in the habit of going straight for a beer instead of having water.   That’s my story anyway.

Oh, and I just noticed,  they recommend ‘six month’.  Whatever.  When the water starts to taste like Burlington water,  that’s the time to change the filter.  It’s not like the water is “bad” or anything,  it’s treated.  But I mean,  it’s REALLY TREATED.  I think they’re trying to ward off the goose poop or something,  ‘cause it’s pretty nasty right out of the tap.  Not like the water in Vienna.  That was awesome.  Straight from the tap.  The word was,  they take particular pride in the quality of their water.  Comes down from the “Wiener Wald”  (Vienna Woods)

I may just go “on the line” and order a few replacements.  When Travelling Companion was staying in Horseheads, I could order them from somewhere in Florida and have them delivered to our door,  and then just bring them home.  Always seemed to be cheaper that way.  It was some “three pack” dealski.

I’m pretty sure I can get them at Sears here locally,  but they seem to mark these things up to the moon.  Besides, by the time I get to the store,  wander around, speak to some insipid sales person only to find out I have to order them from the warehouse anyway,  I’m pretty sure I can just order them from Amazon and be done with it.   But wait!  I just found them at Wally World.

Yes Gentle Reader,  we do have Wally World here in Canada.  Thankfully I don’t actually have to go to the store.  I can order on line and have it delivered to the door.  Sweet!

Especially since I don’t have the car today.  Didn’t see the need.  Hey, delivery was free.  Can’t beat that,  I don’t care how good your mileage is.

Meanwhile,  I did find my panama hat, so I may just spend some time out there digging.

I’d say “gardening”, but that’s a stretch.

Keep those sticks on the ice.

No Leafs game tonight,  so you can all relax.  I’m not a huge hockey fan,  but I will check in on the playoffs.

Thanks for stopping by.

May the fourth be with you.

You knew someone had to say it.  Hello.  Here I am.

Other than really wanting to use that as a blog title,  I haven’t much else.

It’s another beautiful day here in the neighbourhood (TV reference this time,  not the big screen)  so I’ll no doubt spend some of the time outdoors.  I might have to break out the sun block.

Even though there’s no longer a “doggie in the window”,  we did have a visitor the other day.  Daughter Number Two came by to pick up a few errant things,  and brought Kermit along.

After the initial excitement of seeing me,  (hey, he’s excited to see just about anyone, I’m not special) he spent the rest of the visit camped out in three different spots.

OK, lying in the sun I understand,  but then he moved to another couple spots, just to see if he still liked it there?

Next thing we knew,  he was lying in the kitchen.  Weird little bugger.  Too hot?  Too cold?  What?

Oh,  here’s something you don’t see every day.  (we’re not talking about the dizzy dog here anymore)

It just so happened that we got the notice from “Service Ontario” that Travelling Companion’s licence plate sticker comes up in July.  I know,  seems we just got the damned car,  so why would the sticker already be running out?  Has to do with your birthday, and I suppose the wonderful dealership only got a sticker for as short a period as they could get away with.  Just love dealerships.

Anyway,  there was something on there about ordering ‘on the line’,  and I thought I’d give it a try.  You know,  just to avoid that whole standing in line like a sheep program?

It seems like I had no sooner printed out the receipt (April 30th),  turned around twice,  and the thing was in yesterday’s mail!

Some names and numbers have been covered to you know,  just because.

It took so long for my driver’s license to arrive,  that I figured for sure that I’d be calling someone in July,  wondering just where the heck our sticker might be.

I guess stickers are a whole different set of criteria.  Or something.  I’m not complaining!  Just maybe a bit bewildered.

I mean, I realise I’ve been impressed with say Amazon, or Media Markt,  but “Service Ontario”?   A bureaucratic entity?

So wait,  when was the 30th?  Wasn’t that Tuesday?  And I got our new sticker Friday?  Holy Crap on a cracker!  Where am I living?  I swear it used to seem like standing in line took longer.  What is this crazy new world?

*thinks* You mean to tell me I might never have to stand in line there again?  I think I just pooped a little.

And so,  life goes on.  You know, setting up spare beds.  All that sort of cr*p.

This will make a lovely “spare room” at some point in time.

Curiously though,  I didn’t take a photo of the finished product.  I think I had just about had it by that point, and didn’t feel like sharing.   This was interspersed with the Friday routine of changing bedding and cleaning bathrooms.  We now have three.  In Vienna there were only two.

Oh,  and there was some washing of curtains in there as well.  Just a fun filled day.

Speaking of which,  sitting here 'ain’t doin’ it’.  Off I go.

Keep those sticks on the ice.  Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks for stopping by.

No more doggie in the window.

DSC_0018

I still half ways expect there to be an excited dog at the door most times when I come in,  but that’s not the case anymore.  Mind you, there were times when I ‘wasn’t good enough’,  and he wouldn’t bother coming to the door.  No point in any wasted efforts.

The reports are that,  he’s done “visiting” in the new place,  and figures it’s time to come home.  That too shall pass I suppose.

Meanwhile,  it’s on with my own little show here.

I need to send off the dimensions for the remaining windows I want to replace,  and it’s really important that I get accurate measurements.   Haven’t screwed this up so far,  and I’m not about to start.

So there was a little surgery involved.

Some of those parts may find themselves getting reused,  so it wasn’t like I was about to just rip off the trim and stool.

Um, by the way, the “sill” is the part on the outside.  The “stool” is where you set your potted plants.   And other crap.  Just thought I’d mention that.

In several of the locations I’ve made my own stools out of pine or oak,  but in a couple of the bedrooms I reused the old one,  cleaned it up a bit and painted it.  Besides, paintable caulk will hide a multitude of sins.

Hate this part.

I need to know exactly where the window ends and the mortar begins.

DSC_0023

The house is not "brick veneer", or even balloon frame for that matter,  but something that I’ve been told to be “masonry brick” construction.  Sometimes also referred to as “brick and block”.  And yes,  that mortar is pink.  Not kidding.

The header bricks can be seen in the second last photo.

This can make things interesting.  Especially when you go to replace a door with one that comes with its own frame,  only to discover that something needs to be attached to the block wall onto which the door frame then can be affixed.

Helps if a feller knows how to improvise.

Anyhoodle,  I just realised that tomorrow is “put your garden crap out” day,  so I need to fill a couple bags.  The region no longer takes lawn clippings,  so we’ve been going with the mulch program for the last couple of cuts.  The lawnmower seems to puree the grass real good,  and yesterday’s efforts resulted in having to take my time,  since the grass was just a wee bit wet.  I managed.  Well, I managed to stall the poor thing at least once,  but I got through it.  Stalling it is probably not the best thing?

Hey,  maybe I’ll check in, in another week’s time? Seems to be the best I can do.

Keep those sticks on the ice.

Thanks for lookin’.
